i got a new laptop from work Lenovo t400, but the dvd drive has been moded...before it was shipped lenovo got a black marker and scrubed out the RW part on the dvd...

Its a dvd-rw drive, but it has been flashed to just a standard dvd drive firmware is currenly KX01 serial: m1b9ch00246

Model GU1ON (alik701) .....is there anyway i can reflash it to be a dvd-rw again?

It's probably not what you think. More likely they have changed components inside the drive and it's a refurb with new guts in a reused housing.

A dvd-rom firmware isn't going to flash on a burners chipset.

maybe so but its very slimline, being a laptop sata dvd drive..when you take it out it says "Super multi dvd rewriter" on it...

which lenovo have modified and changed the writing on... doesn't matter what it looks like from the outside.. you will need to take it apart and identify the actual circuit board inside.. and the laser/head assembly.

that is the outside case, but there could be anything inside... and the way the label on the drive has been changed seriously says it does not have the same things in it to match up with the label..

It's not unknown for manufacturers to buy a batch of faulty drives and flash them with custom firmware to disable the broken features. Often the drive manufacturers do it to duff burners and sell them on as just rom drives.

Lenovo don't make anything.. they just put bits together from various sources and flog them on..

lots more clear info is needed.. from both the label and the inside of the drive before any kind of guess can be made as to what you might actually have there.

anyway.. it's not relevant to anything.. because the burner firmware isn't to be had anywhere I can find.. and I can usually get my hands on anything like that.

What we do know is it's either a hitachi/liteon or a hitachi/lg drive.. that's what the HL bit in the name means...

happy hunting... perhaps a post over there would be more fruitful.

yeah.. sorry.. I hate to admit defeat on a firmware hunt but I exhausted all my sources. The apparent firmware it has now doesn't register with anything either.

pop over to freaks and see if there is a specific HL firmware thread.. maybe somebody knows something about it... you can't be the only person on the planet with a "tweaked" drive like that .. in fact.. I think in my search I came across a very similar topic but with no solution.
