i have a gca-4040N burner in my laptop (win XP, 384mb ram, P4 2.66ghz). it is much quicker than my desktop (win 98, 512mb ram, P3 800mhz). with the desktop's lite-on, i was able to change the booktype setting so my dvd +r is seen as dvd rom by other dvd players. the laptop only burns dvd +r, so i was wanting to change the booktype setting in the gca 4040N to have the dvd +r seen as dvd rom once burned. is this possible now? i don't think it had that option last year, but LG was supposed to either incororate that into the firmware or come out with a utility. anyone know if this is possible? as far as the most recent firmware, i found this in a forum: from link GO TO http://tdb.rpc1.org then go to LG HL-DT-ST GWA-4040N (GCA-4040N) RPC1 Firmwares based on B107 (DELL) Windows, 1.19 (HP) Windows, and 1.02 (ARIMA) Windows. And pick the last one,, 1.02 (Arima )windows. It will work. is that the most recent firmware? thx

no worries, i've been using KProbe2 a bit more, it seems stable now, i'd better now edit my comments where i said it was unstable
i didn't find much info on booktyping my drive via google. i'll try this out tonight. question....the decrypter utility did allow for setting the booktype on my lite-on to dvd rom, i think i set it correctly. if i run dvd identifier on a disc i burn with that drive, should it show up as dvd rom instead of dvd +r?
i'm not that sure (i only really use -R discs myself). But it you did a disc this way, you could always look in the Nero history log as all burns are appended to the log (i'm tired, can't remember if you have Nero or not). If you do it's in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log or similar. Apologies if you don't use if or you know where it is as i'm rushing as just off home now..
i have whatever portion of nero that came with the liteon burner, not sure if it is even compatible with win 98, i'll try to load it tonight
