    Hello,
I just purchase the very inexpensive CYBERHOME DVD recorder at Walmart for incredible 99$ and it seems to be working fine. The menu is not very well done and it is bit sloww picking up the commands you give it to but it works. The problem I have is this. When I burn on RW disc them my new Gateway computer will open the file and read the disc no problem but if I burn on R disc then my computer will read the disc as a blank one and won't open anything. The one big reason why I purchased this dvd recorder was to transfer all my home HI8 videos to DVDs but now I'm not sure if it can be done. Thanks for your help. Berghof,

Make sure you FINALIZE your -R disks before trying to play them on a different dvd player. You do not have to finalize -rw's but you HAVE to finalize the -R's so other players will recognize and read them. Let me know if that solves your problem.

Mr.Zhelpz thanks for your advice but as far as I can tell there is no way for me to finalize those R discs in other way than it is done automaticaly by the machine itself..When I stop recording a dvd disc a window pops up on my TV and the recorder is informing me that it is finalizing the recording. And that's all.It takes maybe twenty seconds and the finilization process is over.I have no way how to improve or change that part of recording.Maybe it is possible to do on some more advanced recorders but not at CYBERHOME.So I still have to record on RW and then with the help of Shrink I back it up to R disc .It takes much longer but for now that's the only way.Do you believe that some other dvd recorders will do the job well on R discs. You see I'm not sure if those R discs I burn wouldn't play at other DVD players but my computer will recognize only RW.Thanks. Berghof,

First, I am a MRS not a mr.

Anywayz, before you take your recorder back for a different one, what namebrand -R are you using?

Also, do you have any other stand alone dvd player to see if the -R disk will play?

    Hello,

I had the exact same problem with the cyberhome (1600 i believe). The only discs it would burn correctly were the RWs (i did finalize all my +Rs and -Rs. I returned mine and bought a different brand, little more expensive unit. Some people do however have success with this cyberhome unit. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in this problem. If you are close to the return period expiring, i highly suggest returning it now. Also walmart has a comparable unit "LiteOn" that i have read some decent reviews about.

Thanks for your tip Jahckass, that's exactly what I'm going to do.Walmart now gives incerible full three months return policy on most of electronics with the eception of computers, video cameras and digital cameras at least here in Ontario.Sure they can afford doing it ,they are buying the cheap crap from China and so I don't feel guilty at all returning back the junk.I wish I could buy true North American product but those days are gone I'm affraid. Good luck to you all Walmart shoppers.
