i am trying to connect my media center pc and my xbox360 together by using a switch and at the same time connect the switch wirelessly to my wireless router to get my internet connection. However i seem to be having a hard time finding the hardware i need in order to do this. i thought there was a way to use two routers but i cant seem to find instructions on how to do that. if that isn't possible then what hardware would i need in order to accomplish this.
You CANNOT!!! put two routers on the same network. Don't do this because each router is giving off a DNS which is attempting to give each device an IP address. If the two IP addresses are being assigned the computers wont know which one to use. You need to use a switch to connect the computer and the x box together and then wire that to the router or use a wireless receiver that can connect two devices to it. You will have MUCH better speeds and less lag time if you wire the x box and computer directly to the router.
Hi, just wanted to add a little to rogeball's post. I understand what he is trying to say just wanted to clear a few things up for other people reading this thread who may get a little confused. Just to let you know, you can put two routers on the same network. You can put as many as you want on a network as long as they are all configured correctly (see my 2nd point below). You can set up 2 or more wireless routers as a wireless network as long as only one router is configured with DHCP and the others are set as repeaters for the network. I think you mean DHCP. This is what assigns IP's to machines etc. A DNS is a Domain Name Server which basically translates IP addresses into url's (such as 72.14.221.104 which translates to google.co.uk). Definately correct! You will have a much better performance connecting via less nodes. In a nutshell, as Rogeball says, you need to connect each item directly to the router via cable or at least via Wi-Fi. You can get a PCI Wi-Fi card for your PC at around £15 ($20-30). As for the x-box I'm sure there are wireless adapters for them but unfortunately I am not experienced in these at all. Just ensure that you get the adapters that work on the same speed that the router works on (a / b / g / pre-n etc). If you can do, connect the x-box to the router via a cable as Wi-Fi will only slow down your gaming performance and you will suffer lag!
