need to know what your budget is like first?
do you wanna spend thousands or buy a HTIB (which is not the way to go IMHO)

well, shoot... for a grand worth of equipment, i'd suggest a lower price range, and still have flexability, options, and great sound, spend the rest toward speakers, cables, protection, and connectors.
any particular brands you are partial too?

i have a Yamaha RX-V1500 (retail value $850.00) got it on sale for 600 even, but my speakers, i built up over time..
what are your room dimensions like?
do you want 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 sound ? (i'd suggest a 7.1 system) since sooner or later, dvd's will be in 7.1. only a handfull are in 6.1 as it is, and none are in 7.1, but you can take advantage of a 7.1
what will you watch/listen to more? music, movies, games, tv??
all this info will help me give you some pointers !!

The size of your room might matter, but I found a Pioneer 815 7.1 online new for about $220 w/ shipping. and got the Paradigm Cinema series with wires for about 800. Do you already have a HDTV? or a 1080i/720p DVD convertor? You can get a projector and project 100in-120in beatiful HD picture with for under 2000!
