    Here's what I have:

    Magnavox 42" LCD HDTV
    Magnavox VCR
    Toshiba DVD
    Sony Home Theater System

So what I'm trying to do is get the VCR and DVD to hook up to the Receiver with the Home Theater and then run an hdmi cable from the receiver to the TV. Seem pretty simple but I can't get the TV to recognize the DVD player that's plugged into the receiver. The VCR works fine; I can watch cable and record thru the VCR and get the sound to come out of the speakers. But when we switch over to the DVD input on the receiver we loose the sound but still get a cable video signal. I thought if we switched the AV input on the TV to HDMI that would fix it but it doesn't, then I just get a black screen.

If this makes any sense can someone help me please?

Does the dvd player have HDMI output, or is it upconverting? If it doesn't have an HDMI output, you'll need to run digital audio cable from it, to the A/V receiver, and assign the input you used to be the dvd input. If one of the digital inputs is marked dvd already, use that one. Which video output are you using from the dvd player to the A/V receiver, if it's something other than HDMI?
