ok here is my set up i have a cable modem it is hooked up to my computer through the usb(so internet comes from the usb).I bought a router(linksys wireless G) so i can hook up all my gaming devices. this is my problem i want to plug the ethernet cable one end into the router the other into the ethernet slot on the cable modem only problem is i get no internet connection from that slot.do i have to get a different cable modem????
Well, for one you cannot have your internet connection thru two ports at once...it's either USB, or NIC. You'll need a crossover cable from the modem to the router, and straight thru cables from the router to all your other devices/computer.
this is the thing i dont want it hooked up through the usb period i want to go from the cable modem to the router and from the router to the pc,xbox, and ps2. the problem is when i unhook the usb the cable modem goes dead no internet or data come through no more.......
Wha type of cable modem is it? ours is from road runner. when we switched from the usb to the ethernet same as you to hook up to a router for my xbox 360. I had to power off my cable modem and let it sit for a minute. also, if your isp(Road Runner does for a fact) requires the MAC address to be cloned you must set that up in your router. to do that you type in the ip adress of the router (Linksys is 192.168.1.1) then type in the username and password for the router(Linksys is no username just password admin). Then look in the router for a setting called mac adress clone and then click something like clone your pcs mac adress and you are online. That quote is untrue, you always use a standard ethernet cable to use in all cords of a traditional router setup, crossover cables are made for things like pc to pc transfers and are becoming obsolete.
i tried to power off and let it sit but it still wont work i guess im gonna have to call customer service because i cant get it to work...because no matter what i do when i unplug the USB the DATA and PC light go off untill i plug it back in.......
