I hope someone can help me. I've looked through many threads about error 5 and would like a little confirmation.

I recently decided to hotswap my drive so I could get xbmc installed. I seem to have made a mistake and now I get error 5 when I boot, the HDD is the original xbox HDD and the xbox is not modified in any way.

Is the only way to fix this by installing a mod chip? or are their any other methods to fix this.

    thanks d.

either get a modchip or build an eeprom reader to read out your eeprom file (eeprom reader is the cheapest, a few dollar/euro to build!).

i had the same problem after hotswapping (i will never do that again), i had to build the eeprom reader (look on this forum for the tutorial!)

cheers, I'll try and source the parts in the uk and build one up. How did you resolve your problem once you had the eeprom? boot with some sort of linux disk and lock the drive?

    cheers

    indeed......

read the eeprom file (256 bits = 1 kb) and save it as eeprom.bin. then download hdm (search for the tutorial it is really good) and download the softmodded files (c4rn1 posted them, v1., c1.4 and v1.6) or put in a fresh install of the 5960 ms dashboard in the c section of the hdm cd. put the eeprom file on the hdm cd (put it in the folder eeprom) or just copy it to a floppydisk (that is what i do). boot the cd, rebuild your harddrive and lock it with the eeprom.bin file. but look up the tutorial, it is really, really good. it has pictures and a good explanation. you cannot go wrong.
    good luck.

thanks for the feedback guys. I built the reader, but it just reboots the xbox 3 times. I've double checked the schematics and they seem to be good. I'll try rebuilding it from scratch and see if I have better luck. Do you have any tips for building the reader?

Don't use the xbox power.. external power from batteries is the way to go.
