Hi Folks, I was wondering if there would be any Intrest in Starting a Digtal Audio Recording Forum at afterdawn?? I just rescently Got into Creating and Recording Audio on my PC and I"m sure there are a Lot of other Musicians or wanabe musicians out there who would like to Discuss Ideas on Different Techniques of Recording Music and Different PC Recording Hardware/Software ect... I don"t know of any Places were I can Ask Poeple about Problems or different types of Multi Tracking Sound Cards and how to get the Best sound ect and it would be Nice if there was a small forum here that poeple can go to share Ideas... I"m sure if there was enough intrest from enough Poeple the Powers that Be Might consider adding a forum here for that purpose, So maybe we can turn this thread into sort of a petition and if enough poeple show intrest maybe it will happen??? So if there are any aspireing Computer Musicians out there please post a reply and maybe it will get noticed..??.!! Cheers
I agree...there should be a little something more besides "audio" and "hi-res audio" sections...perhaps a "multi-track audio" forum, or "professional audio app" forum. @minion: what apps have you been getting into? I've been teaching Pro Tools for ~5 years now...also use Cubase and Reason.
Hi, Actually I have been useing a program called "Mackie Traction 2.0" which I Find a Lot easier to use than Cakewalk or Cubase and Traction is sort of set up like an analogue Studio which I have a better understanding of so I find it the easiest to use.... I want to try Pro Tools Really Badly But I can"t afford the Money for the Program and I can"t Find a free version anywere.... I use an M-Audio Delta 44 Sound Card and I have a 8 Channel Mixer Hooked up to it and I have My Drum set Miced with the Mixer and I usually Record My Drum Tracks First and then Lay Down Bass and Guitar Tracks after and so far I have been Getting OK Results but I am pretty New to the Recording Game so I"m sure it will get better once I get better at it and Get some Better Equipment... I have Been Playing Music for 20 years and have been in Numerous Rock,Punk,Metal,Blues,R&B Bands But Have never Tried to record by my self before till the Last Month or so..... I have No Problems Playing all of the Instruments by my self but I was Never a Big Song writer so comeing up with material has been the Hardest Part so far and understanding the Software..... What type of set up do you have?? Do use use Live instruments or do you do mostly midi?? Cheers
yeh id love to see a music editing and creation orientated forum on here, i constantly get ppl asking me how to use acid pro and other such programs and really there isnt an appropriate place to ask questions like that on here at the moment. i make my own music using reason and some live recorded elements aswell (depending on what im working on). just a thought here but theres a home theatre forum so why not a home studio forum.. that would cover all of the audio topics like recording and editing
yeah that would be a good idea, until we get one check out Steve Albini's forum at www.electrical.com
Well maybe if enough poeple Post in this Thread they Might do it but they won"t if there isn"t enough Intrest.... I know of a Couple Music Recording Forums But I don"t like them because the Poeple seem Really Stuck up Musician Types...Go Figure...LOL darthnip: That Name "Steve Albini" It sounds Really Familiar... Wasn"t he in a Band Called "Big Black" back in the Early 90"s and eventually went on to Become a Producer and did a Bunch of work with "Fugazi"(With Ian McKay From Minor Threat) and a Bunch of other Bands??? Cheers
dude you are the first person in years to know who Steve was! Yeah he was in big Black, then Rapeman, and now Shellac. He owns electric audio in chicago. he engineered nirvana's in utero, even did that plant and page cd. i've had the joy of seeing him play with all 3 bands, and the dude is kick ass. his whole idea on the music business is great. he's one of those guys you never hear about but he has his hands in tons of stuff. and he's actually pretty cheap as far as recording expense. i got a lecture he did in tennessee thats pretty awesome to watch, i just like how's he's like totally down to earth and realistic as far as music business goes. some good reading right here - http://www.negativland.com/albini.html
@Minion: I recently just upgraded from an MBOX, which is a USB powered 2 channel in/out 48Khz unit with SPDIF to a 002, which is 8 channels in/out of 24bit 96Khz audio. Yeah I've been using Pro Tools for about seven years now, teaching it for the past three. You can get an MBOX that comes with the latest version of Pro Tools LE, which does 32 tracks of audio and 99 tracks of midi for under $500. And considering how powerful of a program Pro Tools is, that is a steal! The program and hardware itself isn't very expensive, but the plugins are. The best out there are the WAVES brand plugin. They have plugin packages exceeding 15 grand!
i'd love to see a forum like that here at AD. i dont write my own stuff or play, but i love to run sound board and mix and record for bands that i know around here whenever i get the chance.
darthnip: I have allways Liked Steve Albini"s Music and it"s Good to hear that he is still in the Business...Big Black was one of my favorite bands in the Early 90"s(Back when I had a 3 Foot Mowhawk..LOL).... djscoop: I actually have a Lot of Waves Plugins and even have a Version of ProTools that I bought on EBay But it turned out that the Version I bought was not Compatible with M-audio Hardware (Accept for the M-Box) and I had to get a "M-Powered" version and since I bought it on e-bay there was no Chance of Returning it so I am Out $125 on a Piece of Software I can never use..... I could never Justify Spending $500 on a Piece of Software when My Whole Studio (Mixer,Mics,Cables,Stands, ect) barely cost that much... I have usually allways Gotten my Software free from Work (which is were I got the Software I am useing now and the Waves Plugins) so i have allways Been Fortunate in that Regard.... Actually the Software I am useing to record (Mackie Traction 2.1) supports up to 99 Audio Tracks and 256 Midi Tracks and supports VST Plugins and DX ect so I can use my Waves Plugins with them but Since I also Don"t use any Midi Instruments I have no use for any of the Midi Features.... I"m actually going to check back at work in the Audio Department(Were they Mix Sound Tracks) and see if they have M-Powered ProTools there..... Cheers PS: I met Green Day Back in the Early 90"s, They Played at the Rec center in My Town and they needed a Place to stay so I let them stay at My Place (It was a BIG Party House) and I have to say that they weren"t the Nicest poeple you would ever meet...They Had been Touring in a VW Van for a few Months and Really Stunk Badly Like they Hadn"t Showered for Months and they kept trying to Pick up every girl that walked in the Room...Needless to say they didn"t do very good Smelling like that....LOL
you met green day? you are my new hero minion...lol and the M-Box isn't made by M-Audio, its made by digidesign (the makers of pro tools). Those Waves bundles are sweet though, aint they? Talk about expensive...
Well I was Finally able to get a Copy of "M-Powered Protools"...I got a Copy from the audio department at work (Were they Mix sound Tracks)...I got version 6.0 but I also Found a way to Get Non-M-Powered versions to work with M-audio Hardware useing a Patch.... And Yes I did Meet "Green Day", I actually Met them Twice as the Stayed at my Place both times they Played in Victoria (I think in 1991 and 1992)...At the Time I didn"t think they were going to go very Far as they sounded too much Like Pop Punk but it did eventually Catch on it just Took about 10 years..... I don"t know if I told you this But I have been looking to Buy some Good Condenser Mics for my Recording Studio but they are all Very Expensive so I found some Plans on the Net on how to build one for less than $10...I didn"t know if it was going to work but after Picking up the Parts ($7) and Wireing it all Together and useing the Body of a crappy Old dynamic Mic to put the Condenser in I plugged it in and it Worked Really Good, It actually sounds Just as Good or even better than any of My Dynamic Mics and was about 20% the Price of my Cheapest Mic..... If you would like to give this a Try and Build your Own Condenser Mics then let me Know and I"ll send you the Schematics and Instructions on how it is Done...It is Very Easy as Long as you Know how to Solder and have a Small Bit of Electrical Knowlege and Most all of the Parts can be found at Radio Shack but it is Best to Get Good Quality Mic elements($2 to $5 each) as the Ones at radio shack aren"t very good, well I guess they are OK just not as Good as Some... I think I am going to be Ordering about 20 High Quality Mic elements in the Next couple weeks so if you are interested in Doing this Maybe we can go in a some and Get a Better Price on them?? If your interested then let me know.... Cheers
yeah man, that sounds cool. I'd love the schematics. It shouldn't be that hard to built, there aren't many parts required to make a microphone. Even less for a consensor than a dynamic. Have you started building yours yet?
djscoop: Hi, Yes I allready Built one Last Night, I just used a Mic element that i got at Radio Shack(not the best Kind but I first wanted to see if it would work) for $4 and the Capacitors and Resistors i got at a Electronix Shop and I used the Body of a Crappy $3 Dynamic I bought at the Dollar Store to Build My Condenser arround... It Took me a Couple Hours because I had never built one Before so i wanted to be Carefull that I did it right and I had to Hone up on my Soldering Skills.... The Instructions called for a 9v Battery but I couldn"t Fit a 9v in the Body on the Mic so I used 4 small Watch Batteries, You just need from 2 to 9 Volts.... well anyways after Building it I Just Plugged it into my Crappy Practice amp to see if it worked and to my Utter Surprise It worked and with no Humm or Noise or anything.... So Today I used the Mic as an Overhead to Mic my Drum Cymbals and recorded some Drum Tracks and when I listened to the Playback I was even more Surprised at how well it sounded, It was very Loud ,Much Louder than any of my Dynamics and It sounded Just as Good or better than all of my Dynamics and it sounds as Good as My Peavey EC-10 Condenser Mic which retailed for over $100 when it was New..... Here is a Pic of the Schematic: And here are the Basic Parts needed: (1) Panasonic WM-66AY Omnidirectional Microphone Element (available from Digi-Key at 800-344-4539, part # P9959-ND). This Element is a high-quality back electret type with a frequency response that is ruler flat from 20Hz to 20kHz. It contains an internal FET impedance converter making an external FET unnecessary. You can actually use any Mic element but the "WM-66AY" is One of the Better ones.... (1) 1000 pF ceramic disc capacitor (1) 10uF mylar or metalized polypropylene capacitor (DO NOT substitute an electrolytic!) (1) 2.2Kohm 1% metal-film resistor (1) 9-volt battery terminal w/leads(You can also use 2 or 3 AAA or 3 or 4 1.4v Watch Batteries or anything as Long as if Puts out from 2v to 9V (3v to 5v is optimal) but no more than 9v or you will fry the Element (1) 9-volt alkaline battery(Or whatever type you choose) Insulated copper wire (1)XLR Connector (Male) Here is the Site were I got the Instructions but the Schematic I posted above is easier to Folow than the one at the Web site.... http://www.prosoundweb.com/recording/tapeop/buildmic/buildmic_16_1.shtml I got in touch with a Wholesale Electronix Store on line and they are Going to send me some Prices on High Quality Condencor Mic elements and I am going to Order some in the Next couple weeks so if you are interested in getting some then we can make arrangements to get them together to save a Bit of Money?? The elements are only about $2 or $3 each but go down to about $1 each in Bulk and the Capacitors and Resistors are only about 25c each and you can get a Bag of XLR Connectors for a few Bucks so you could Make a Condenser Mic for about $5 that will Perform as well as a $100 to $300 Mic..... I"m going to try and make a Mult-Element Mic with each element haveing a Different Frequency responce and wire up a Switch so I can switch from one element to another depending on the Application..... Well anyways I have been Totally Hyped on this Since I found out how good it sounded even with a Radio Shack element and I am also thinking of Makeing some Mics and selling them....I am also Probably going to replace all of my Mics with condencors Made by ME!! Anyways let me know if you want to go in on some elements and we can then make arrangements..... Cheers
sweet man, looks like I got most of the parts already. You gave me something to tinker with this weekend...thanks!
Hey Minion (And anyone else on this board) Are you still selling those high quality mic condensers? Im interested in making the mics and need some parts. Could you sell some to me? Thanks!
