I would like to put some of my daughter's videos on the ipod and get rid of all those bulky tapes. Can I hook the VCR up to I-tunes and will it do the conversions? It does it for my CD's when I put them in.

what you have to do is get a video camera that use mini dv tapes. Hook it up to vcr and record tapes while they are playing on the camera. Then you need a firewire cable that goes from your camer to computer. Then you make it a video file on window movie maker. Then convert it to mpeg 4 with videora converter.

A company called ADS makes some video capture devices that connect via firewire to your computer. One is called Pyro (about $200) but they make others that are less expensive.

Connect the VCR outputs to the inputs on the converter and capture the VCR output into your computer with the supplied software. Most likely it will be an AVI that will be very large compared to an mpeg of equal length.

Use the captured AVI with one of the many programs used to convert dvd's to ipod compatible video files. Unfortunately itunes is useless for doing anything with video except putting it on an ipod.

I will leave all the mp4 conversion tips to the threads stickied at the top of the forum.

    Good luck.
