You downloaded an windows based emulator? (If its meant for the xbox it will not load under windows) You first need to extract the contents of that archive into a folder. After the contents are fully extracted the emulator directory will be exposed. There will be a ROM folder. Just place the appropriate roms of such emulator. After you have done that click on the file that has a .exe extension usually found in the root directory. That file loads the emulator.

Download Winzip. Once you have installed it, open the file and extract the contents. Or right click the file, on the right window pane click extract.

Please help us to help you..

It's a current MAME emulator? for XP?? The binary NOT the source???

Usually they are a folder with a xxxxxx.exe file or 2 in it.. and a folder for roms along with a heap of other files and stuff. There should be a "readme" file there too. maybe with no ending .txt.

A link for what you downloaded would be useful. I don't mind downloading some stuff and experimenting. or if you want to work it out yourself try reading all of this http://mamedev.org/devwiki/index.php?title=Frequently_Asked_Questions

(please note.. a couple of us did ask for a specific emulators section, but it wasn't thought important enough so they get buried all over the place)

No.. the hdd is the place for it.

try the full path to the folder. best way to find it is to navigate there in windows and then type exactly what you see in the location bar.
I don't like dos in xp.. it's unfamiliar..

To find where your directory is try
    C:\ dir

    big heap....
    xxxxxxxxx <dir>
    xxxxxxxxx <dir>
    xxxxxxxxx <dir>

somewhere there will be the first directory... and cd to that
    cd whatever

and again and again until you get there.

I will d/l the files later and work it out for you.. I have an xp machine in for repair..then post a walkthrough. no worries.

{EDIT} I found the problem right off... You have downloaded the source code.. go back to the mame site and find the previous releases page. Then d/l the mame0118b.exe file.
It will come down as a 7zip file.. don't worry about that, winrar can deal with it.
Unpack it into a new folder somewhere easy to get to like D:\mame and have a look at the contents.
It launches from the command line so you will need to read the config and the windows file carefully..
You will need roms too.. I can't help with those.
