how do i get my minidv on my pc?

    i just got a canon mv830 and i dont know how i get the content of my minidv tapes onto my pc. I only have a usb cable. I tried conecting it and i clicked capture video in the windows xp movie maker but it says it didnt dedect the camera. how is it done? what mode must the camera be on? what preogram should i use?
