Can anyone give me any ideas on how to fix my Samsung burner to burn at 16x on Nero? Nero only shows it at 8x and even though I use 16x media, I can only burn at 8x. I downloaded latest firmware version SB03, but it still doesn't help!

    Help?

Well I will give you the short answer. [bold]Do not burn at 16x![/bold]
This will result in bad burns. You want to burn at 8x max with Taiyo Yuden disks and 4x max with Sony or Verbatim. Do not burn any slower than 4x with the media mentioned.

There isn't any compromise, becos burning at 16x is pointless unless you want lots of coasters...

But the thing is, I burn at 16x on my NEC 3550A all the time and I rarely if ever get coasters....

I just want to know how I can make my Samsung burn at 16x-18x as stated on its specs?

Yes but my point still stands...
The NEC is a better burner so it's not surprising - the Samsung isn't as good.

So basically you're saying that even if I could burn at 16x on the Samsung, don't do it becuase it will give me coasters? Is the Samsung really that bad?

To the first question - yes.
To the second question - no.

They may seem like contradicting answers, but the samsung isn't rly bad, just not a brilliant drive.

I understand that I shouldn't burn at 16x, but I did pay for this burner and it should be able to burn at 18x as it states. I would just like to know why Nero doesn't detect it at 18x/16x, but it detects the NEC at 16x?

Did I get a defective Samsung drive?

Well advertised or not it won't burn at 18x becos there are NO 18x disks available on the market.
You didn't get a defective Samsung.
The lazy way to burn at full speed is click burn before you put a disk in and then set it to 16x when you insert disk.

I think, however i don't do it. lol

Seeing as you are a senior member here, I'm just going to go on what you say.....

But do you know why Nero only gives me 8x option to burn for the Samsung?

BTW - Thanks for your input!

Nero probably only gives that option becos it wants quality burns when using it's software.

The Samsung will burn @ 18max on Verbs using imageburn. @ Ripper I think you will find a lot of us now burn @ 12x and even 16x on our movies now. It was in the old days of 8x max burners that the 4x max burn was deemed as fast as you should go. I use Verb exclusively and burn with the Samsung or my Benq 1650 or 1655 and never and i do mean never get bad burns. My quality scans are always 94 and up and I check them often to guarantee this. This is just my opinion but I sure a lot of people agree. My 2 cents

@ nearsite You could try cdspeed to burn with your Samsung to see how fast and what quality you get. I think you will be plesantly surprised.

Yes that's a good poitn you have there. And i burn my verb (ty's) at 8x too. I have an LG burner and can't do disk quality checks cos it isn't supported :( lol

But however, i don't think he should burn above 8x with his samsung becos it is a samsung.

But i can guarantee that if i asked around many of the senors/ addicts in the nero forums etc they will back me up that 8x is the max for them - on very good disks.

However you still have a valid point :)

    Hi,

Have you tried different brands of DVD's? Your NEC 3550A can burn at 16x
with certain brands, but ur Samsung might want a bite of other brands to be able to burn at that speed. ;)
The option to burn at 16x should become available when you put in the proper ones.. (and yez eventhough DVD brands yell 16x burnable, not all recorders will want/take em. Just try buying different brands and see which it likes.)

@RIpper At least we agree to disagree unlike some who would rather do battle. And usually I do agree with your posts. Keep up the good work. Johnny
