If Windows Millennium Edition can detect if you did a improper shutdown(power cut) the scandisk will boot up at start.

if you did an improper shutdown in windows, it will do a scandisk before it goes into windows.

in xp the improper shutdown doesn't affect the integrity of the hard drive unline in previous versions of Windows... if it thinks there may be a problem with the drive, then it may scan it on startup otherwise don't worry too much about it...

Check in the System Information log. This should be in...

    >Accessories >System Tools >System Information

    Go through all the logs.

Easiest way to know for sure would be 2 check the event logs.

    Go to Control Panel
    Administrative Tools
    Event Viewer

    open it up

look to your left and double click on system

Look for the specific time you shut down your computer in the logs
.. .if there are no errors, then most likely there is no problem with windows.... there might be a hardware problem tho..

if i'm not mistaken, Windows ME ran in FAT32 so if the computer crashed it needed to run scandisk in order to recover the drive due to FAT32 file system... And XP runs the NTFS file system that doesn't have the same issues as FAT32. so that's why it isn't nessacery to run scandisk after a crash... feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

why fat32 over ntfs? is there an advantage to that or is it just personal preference?

most of my customers don't have single files over 4gig which is a fat32 limit & can use a win98 bootdisk to do a file repair so that windows can load without using xp cd.

okay... i see... the 4 gig limit don't work with me due to my 4.3gb dvd-5 backups... and yes, the 98 bootdisk, one of the 9 wonders of the world. it has saved me on many of occasions, but is slowly becoming obsolete...

    In the event viewer/system

I think its Event ID 6006.This tell you windows has shutdown correctly.

It is not logged when you hit the reset button or power cut.

    6005 -start
    6009 - ?

Normal windows startup/shutdown log event ID

    6005 -start
    6009 - ?
    6006 -stop
