I have a ~5 year old Dell desktop that came with a DVD+RW drive, and I'd like to take it out and put it in another computer. Will I need a disk or something to install it, or will it install automatically?
As long as the burner is connected properly, the system will recognize it after a reboot. http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6603_7-5118840-1.html
Yes it might be especially after 5 years of hard use ! A more current /recent (read New here ) Burner will have current firmware or at the very least firmware that you could update to the current version so you could Burn more efficiently ! ( more Brands & types ) of media = Better write- Strategies ect... In addition You can get a decent drive very inexpensively now ! also your old drive may have not been able to booktype where a new one could ! It's all up to you in the end ! Another point is if the computer your moving the burner to is very new it's probably set up for SATA where as your old drive is probably Pata? - so it'd probably be cheaper to either buy another drive or turn the old one into an external druve as the other gentleman said ! Good luck either way BuddY!!!!
