this is what im trying to do: i have 2 wireless routers (xmicro 108mb, smc 54g). upstairs i have the xmicro is the wireless router connected to the cable modem. downstairs i have a mac mini and a ps2 i want to connect to the smc wireless router. so im trying to setup the smc to connect wirelessly to the main router upstairs, the xmicro. i am not trying to connect these with wires, im doing this all wirelessly. the guy at microcenter told me i could set them up to work that way, but i cant figure it out. any suggestions?
You mean you just want to network the two computers that have these routers? I'm sorry, I wanna help but I'm not really understanding the question.
ok, im basically just trying to connect my ps2 to the LAN on a wireless router i have. and i want to set that router up to connect wirelessly to my wireless router upstairs that is connected to my cable modem. im trying to setup a wireless router on a wireless network, like an access point. i want wireless internet for my ps2, and the guy at microcenter said i could set up a wireless router to communicate with another wireless router to make that happen.
Yep, you can. Just go into your control panel (of you base station computer) and create a wireless network. Now I've never setup wireless with a gaming console but I know with computers, once you setup the network...you repeat the steps (usually via USB) on the other computers of the network and you're done. The setup should guide you through the process.
but how do i get the wireless router connected to the ps2 to connect wirelessly to the main wireless router connected to the cable modem? i already have a wireless network setup, i just need to setup another wireless router to connect to the main wireless, without wires.
It should work just like an xbox. If you have a home network established for weeks and buy/build a softmodded xbox to it. Once the LAN connection has been plugged, it will enable itself and take on the settings of the network. You PS, once the wireless is enabled on the system it should roam and find the set up on it's own. The only thing I would be unsure about is if you have your Wireless network password protected. Maybe you know...Is there some kind of setup page for the PS once you have a wireless connection installed?
ok i think thats my problem. i have a 26 digit password on our ssid. i doubt i can enter that information on my ps2, ill try it out. so how do i configure the wireless router i have setup to the ps2? do i give it an ssid (same or different than main wireless router) do i set it for open access do i setup my shared key on the one downstairs? do i set it to AUTO CHANNEL or do i give it the same channel as the main wireless router ill look into the option to enter a key on my ps2. but it sounds like all i have to do is set the router to open settings and plug in the ps2 and it should work? we'll see. thanks for the help.
Like I said, I'm not really sure about that. I don't own a PS2 and when I did have one...nothing was wireless. lol. You'll have to search the settings to see if it allows you to enter a key. If not, which I'm sure there has to be a way, but if not I wouldn't continue this setup. You don't want to leave you home network unsecured.
ok, im gonna reset my router for the ps2. what changes should i make to it in its settings before i connect it to the ps2. i have it connected to a pc LAN right now. i know ive ready about dhcp and stuff like that. i know i can pick an IP on the ps2 so i think thisll work.
Not sure exactly but you probably want to mirror your PC settings with the exception of you IP address of course
i didnt understand that last reply. my main w-router connected to my cable modem has ip of 192.168.1.1 and my w-router for my ps2 is 192.168.2.1. im going to go connect the router to the ps2 and try to configure it and give it an IP of 192.168.2.111 or something and see what happens. but i think i have to get both routers on the same IP or something right? i know i can change my main routers IP to whatever i want, but my ps2 router hasnt been successfull in changing the IP. let me know if i should change my main routers IP to the secondard routers 192.168.2.1. and lemme know how i should configure this ps2 w-router.
Usually on a network all the settings for all the devices are the same with the exception of IP addresses.
