Yea sorry I didnt notice the "PM sent" post another user made in that thread, I thought you were referring to me when you closed it. My mistake!
Hi wooley , Thanks for the tutorial and it looks great , I am about to try it but I’m totally confused about the washers and screws , I have two screw types one with a 4mm head and the other is a 3mm head , I have 1mm steel washers and 1mm plastic washers can you tell me the best way for me to fit these , Also do i need to reuse the xclamps as most tutorials say not to , A You tube tutorial would be great if there is any Many thanks
Use the one with the 3mm head and 1 nylon washer only on the bottom side. Or even better see if you can find the same screw with a tapered head...they have a lower profile and should help you get the 3mm that you need. You can sit the screw and washer next to the standoff and see if it's too big or not. Yours is probably going to be a little taller with the 3mm head + 1mm washer but it may be ok...perhaps dont tighten the motherboard screws down really tight. On the top side use 2 washers per screw. And no, you dont reuse the x-clamp in any way.
Many thanks wooley for your help and time and using your method I have just fixed two machines , Can you tell me where you get your 2mm head screws from and 2mm depth washers as I Cannot find anybody in the uk that sells them , Well not that I have seen yet, All the kits on fleabay seem to have the 3mm head , Also I’m a bit unsure of using these plastic washers I purchased from rs as I’ve heard that certain ones melt , Is it better using the red fiber washers or should this not be a problem Once again many thanks and keep up the great work...
thanks to wooly i tried this with one i had sitting around and no more red lights have to play to see if it freeze.
I get both from a local ace hardware store. They are hard to find though. Home depot and lowes neither one carry the washers I use and only lowes has the screws. Might want to see if you can find them online, they're tapered flat head m5 machine screws .80 x 10 and #10 nylon or fiber washers
I got a couple 360s to repair today and I asked the guy if they'd ever been worked on before. He said they had had the x-clamp fix done before and it worked for a little while but the same e74 came back. So I told him I could probably fix it for him and when I took it home I saw the metal chassis was bowing out underneath where the x-clamps are. "Too many washers" I thought--little did I know how right I was: That's 5 washers per screw! Waay too many and was seriously making the chassis flex outward lol! He did use the same tapered head screw that I use but I only use *1* not 5 (and it's nylon not metal like these). So yea...dont do your xbox like this kids
That looks quite insane!! I'm definitely going to try your method I've done the eraser method and it worked but I couldn't stand it up. I've also done the X-clamp I got the 2 red lights problem but when I put everything back to together it started working but later it just started to freeze.
hi wooly, a quick question , would if be beneficial fitting two nylon washers , One each side of the board then a metal washer on top of the nylon under the heat sink or is there a reason why not to do it , Many Thanks
This is what I do to make sure the metal doesn't scrape the board when im screwing my heatsinks on. I havnt seen any issues with this.
Thanks miketrev i,ll give it ago tonight on the one i,m doing , I hold no hope for this one as the guy has allready tried it with spring washers and badly scored the board but i will try anyway Cheers
No worries. I hate it when peeps use them dumbass spring washer, they wreck the xbox I have had a few come my way and rarely able to fix them
I dont know if its just me but it feels like my console runs cooler after doing that, not so much heat on the bottom and rear of the case. Still has some heat but not near as much.
Hmm so you guys are saying 3 washers on the top side? 2 nylon and 1 metal? It seems like it provides good support and you could torque the screw down as hard as you'd like but it doesnt look like it's just barely touching the gpu and not touching the little edram die on the gpu chip at all. But then again as long as the system doesnt overheat when you turn it on i guess it'd be fine...I'm sticking to the 2 washer way personally. It definitely seems to run cooler as gcooldude mentioned as compared to stock
My mistake, I misread your post. Personally I dont mess with the metal washers just because I like thick ones I use on top but I dont see how it could hurt, the spacing is going to be the same.
No probs mate , How tight do you tighten the screws back up as i have noticed that the metal clips on the heatsink do slightly bend, On the one heatsink as the other just screw in to the main unit anyway.. Can you over tighten these at all causing any bends Thx
actually I noticed that too which was why I mentioned earlier that you shouldn't torque them down real hard. I also noticed the motherboard will flex if you tighten them down too much. So basically I just tighten it up as tight as I can with my fingers then give it another quarter turn or so with the screwdriver it should be good. Really you just need it to make good contact and it doesnt take a lot of pressure to do that
