Inside a laptop is a small heatblock with a heatpipe (like in fancy CPU coolers, but there's just one rather than several) and this leads all the way to a small heatsink at the back, which sits next to a radial fan, which blows air through the heatsink and out of the laptop. This one's for a Toshiba Tecra but yours will be very similar:
