How to add a third DVD rom?

    I was just wondering how i would be able to add a third DVD rom i hvae 2 HD and a CD drive and a DVD drive i was just wondering how i woul dbe able to add another knowing all my IDE cables are in use any help would be great.

    One option is to purchase an IDE card for your computer - this will allow you to add 4 additiional devices (I have several of these running). A second option is to purchase an external USB 2.0 or firewire enclosure and place the drive in same.

    Or you could swap out your cd drive for another dvd drive as it can do anything the cd drive does anyway.

    I agree with boxwrench. The extra CDROM will also take up power from the PSU, it might be a problem in power hungry unit.

    Be sure to pay attention to the power supply! Adding another drive could put you close or over the edge on your existing power supply. Lots of strange things can occur due to an overloaded power supply. Don't rely on what the label on your existing power supply says. With all you listed as already in your PC, you have a pretty good amount of power being used. Replaceing a cd rom might be your better option.

    Assuming your power supply can handle it, and if you go the IDE card route I would also add another fan to the case. I added two to my system since I have 2 hard drives, orb drive, LS120 drive, 2 Plextor DVD drives, and a Plextor CD burner, an additional IDE card and a SCSI card in my sustem.

    tip,

    get your self a external usb-2 dvd-burner..i use them all the time..
    i use liteon's around 75 dollars is what i paid..
    i got 3-external liteons 1693...great drives..

    I agree, I have the folowing external USB 2.0 burners and they work great: Iomega, Fantom, Plextor, Sony (4). And I can quickly move them from conputer to computer. I have external CD burners so you could also go that route - put the new DVD burner in the system and get an external USB 2.0 case for the existing CD burner. I have about 6 external USB 2.0 enclosures that I use with various burners and Hard Drives.

    Thnx again guys, ya my bad i have 2 DVD drives 1 rom and 1 burner i was also thinking of putting a third HDD in it just for back up but i mihgt go external for that. ya i believe my power supply is a 520w so im sure it will be ok
