how to apply halo patches

hey i think this tut explains how to apply a .ppf patch (http://halomods.com/tutorials/Basics/ppf/ppf.php), but what about others, eg-.dds? is there any way to disable a patch so that you wouldn't have to delete it then reapply it if you don't wanna use it one time? and i guess if you don't want a patch anymore, you could just delete it in the ms dash right?
