Yeah the £6 a month I pay is for unlimited downloads, so you can download as much as you want un-capped. The other thing you need to look at is the retention rates.

Retention rates determine for how long the files stay on the server for, as if they vanish mid download then your gonna have to start again. News Servers do not have unlimited storage, and due to this fact they can only hold posts for a short length of time before they must delete them in order to make room for new posts.

For news servers provided by Internet Service Providers (ISP's) as part of a user's subscription package, typical retention rates are usually only 2-4 days.

For premium news servers, this is normally aroud 3 months

wii's do not play dvd's as of yet.

    but the new ones will

I think its a bit of redemption for the poor new guys who have to fork out 100 quid for a DC2KEY modchip.

So does anyone know if the new units have the DVD support yet? This link says second half of 2007, and it's now 2008. Can anyone confirm that DVD's now play in the new Wii's?

DVD playback has only been released in japan thus far but will be released over here later in the year.

If you have a modded Wii, (which I assume you have otherwise you wouldnt be in here) Team symbiote have released a hack that will allow you to play dvds on your wii.

    http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=19907

its a little long winded i belive as you have to load the cd up everytime you wanna play one, (a bit like the old swap magic disks for the ps2)and to be honest, I dont know why you dont just buy a dvd palyer for a fiver off ebay.

I belive there is a new mod chip out too that allows you to play them without the disk the "WiiXT" but havent seen any about so dont even know if theyre available yet

Yes I can, and No they do NOT support DVD playback. You can however get your Wii Modded to support DVD playback, almost all ModChips do. But most people have a DVD player anyways, why spend $80+ on a modchip plus installation when you can go out to any wallmart/radioshack(the source) and pick up a DVD+DivX player for $19.95

Don't think there are many people in the "HOW TO BACK UP WII GAMES" forum without a modchip though, as you cant play backups without 1, but anyway, the current wii's are best kept for Wii games, and dvd players for dvds, as disk swaps tend to f*** up the laser

Alright, sorry I'm still having trouble understanding. If I do not have a modded Wii, I cannot play DVDs. If I have a D2C chip modded Wii, I cannot play DVDs unless I mod the firmware?

Or does it just work with the D2C chip and that firmware thing you linked is just for people without a mod-chip?

Ok for some reason I have installed the wiikey and all the firmware up to the 1.9b all that went well but at best only a few out of everything I have backed have played and only intermittently if anyone could be nice enough to send me a known good back up it would be greatly appreciated I just need to know if it is something I am doing wrong or what. Wii Sports would be fine and safe since that is what comes with the we can't get nailed of not having it.

If you have a backup, and the Wii reads it as a backup, you Wii and chip are OK......you will want to try and burn onto different media.

what I am trying to say is it recognized and update with the firmware disks but when it comes to backups even the ones that did work only worked every now and then not all the time. So what I was looking for was someone with a known good Backup that I could try. I don't need anything special just something to test with.

Westaj, let me try to re-word.

You need a modchip in your wii otherwise your wii will not read anything other than an original nintendo wii games.

if you have a modchip, then you can consider downloading that homebrew application from the link I sent you, once downloaded, burn the iso file with nero. Pop it in your wii, wait for it to load up, press the Z button, take the disk out, put your dvd in, and watch it.

Alternatively you could wait for the newer model wii to come out which will have dvd playback.

    frust8ed,

Sounds lik ethe problem your having is due to a bad copy disk, or it could also be a problem with your laser. What speed did you burn the disks at? try to burn them at a really low speed (2X), and with high quality media such as verbatims. If they still dont work then its defo a laser problem unfortunately.

    Yo,
Iv been backing up Wii games for almost a year now and some of my backups have stopped working!? Some of them work fine, some of them the Wii recognises as the correct game but during the load up it displays the error "please insert _______ Game Disk" and then wont read it at all, and for others the Wii doesnt recognise them as a Wii disk at all. I could understand it being a poor copy but all of the games have played at least 10 times absolutely fine, and have randomly decided to stop!? I use Verbs 16x (but burn at 2x), does anyone have any ideas whats happening to the discs? Some of them have some very fine scratches on them, but Iv had PS2 backups work fine scratched 10times more!
    Cheers

I installed a DVD burner, and wrote this file as well as a 4.37gig game onto 2 different 4.7g DVDs. The Wii was unable to read the disc. Please help. I think the problem may be that one of the wires isn't perfectly soldered. I made a video, but the camera blocked out the chip causing a bad angle and shadowing. Help would be much apprieciated

I'm also trying out Nero, I'm wondering: Did I choose all the correct settings to burn it? Do I need to adjust any?
