Well you Didn"t mention if you had a Capture device or Not because without a Capture device you are not going to get Very Far....

So tell up if you have one and If you Do tell us what type of Capture device you have and if you don"t you will need to go and get one before you can do anything....

    Cheers

A Capture device is what you need to get the Video from the 8mm Camcorder to your PC....

It can Be a PCI Capture Card or it can be a USB Capture Device or it Can be a Firewire Capture device....

You can get a Cheapo one for under $50 but the cheapo ones don"t produce very good quality and can experience Problems with audio and Video sync and other Problems.. If you want a Good one you will Need to spend between $150 to $250 to get a Good Quality Capture device that will Produce acceptable quality.. You will also need Video Capture software and Software to convert the Captured video to the correct format for DVD and software to author the Movie to DVD...

The Process can be Time consumeing and take a Bit of time to figure out the best method.....

    Cheers

Thanks, it does sound like a lot to go thru. I think my computer is set up with the software for making the video's, but I'll need a usb cable or something for the video camera.

    Again thanks for your help.

If your Camcorder is a Hi8 Camcorder then there will not be a USB Output on it because Hi8 is Analogue and will only have a S-Video output and a RCA/Composite Output which are the outputs that you would Plug into the Capture device...If it had a USB output then you wouldn"t need a Capture Device but then again if your Camcorder had a USB output then it wouldn"t be a Hi8 Camcorder it would be a Digital camcorder...

Like I have allready said You need a Capture Device to get the Video from the Camcorder to your PC...
You can"t do anything untill you get a Capture device of Some Sort .....
If you tell me How much you are Willing to Spend then maybe I can tell you what Capture device to get within your price Range, You can generally get a Fairly good one for about $150 and an extremely good one for about $250 or a Really Crappy one for about $50....

    Cheers

    Check out the Canopus ADC50

    http://www.canopus.com

you will also need a firewire enabled motherboard or a firewire card.

This box is an investment and has resale value on ebay. You can also convert friend's videos/Super 8s for cash :)

What kind of material are you encoding ;)

I personally recomend the Canopus ADVC units but they are a Little more than you are willing to Spend($150 to $250) or something like a "Hauppague WinTV PVR 150/250/350" which will run you about $150 You might be able to Find a deal on one of these devices on E-Bay as I have seem many of them on eBay for sale so you Might want to Take a Look.......Cheers

Ok, I'm completely new to this, but my parents have Super8 film of my childhood. They still have the working projector. What do I need to get this to my computer so I can burn it to a DVD. I don't have a capture card or any other special hardware for my computer. I also don't know how to get it from the projector to the DV camera or whatever capture device to digitize this film. Is there anything that will plug into the computer that you can just feed the film into and digitize it so that there is no loss by running it through the projector and capturing it with the camera?

    Thanks,
    Mark

There is No easy or Cheap way of getting Film on to Your PC as the equipment you would need to Transfer Film to your PC with any Acceptable Quality would Cost many thousands of Dollars...

You would be better off Takeing the Film Reels to a Studio that does this Type of Stuff and get them to Transfer the Film to either VHS , DV Tape or DVD.....

If you are really desperate you could Try setting up the Projector and project the Film on to a Screen and then Take a DV Camcorder and Point it at the Screen and record what it being Projected on the Screen...I think you would get the Best results if you Put the Screen Very close to the Projector and Put the Camcorder very close to the Screen and get an Up Close Shot, It"s worth a try......

    Cheers

Mark - the method of capturing film 8mm described above is acceptable for most people. You will see some loss / degradation, as you are effectively filming the projected image and the optics of the projector as well as the integrity of the surface onto which you are projecting are important.

There are lots of labs that do this kind of work, mainly clustered around media centres (London, Los Angeles, New York) (some do a professional service which will produce large files which you can then play around with). I would try the camera version - then if you're not satisfied, go investigate the labs.

    Remember:

    * total darkness in the projection room ! (do it at night, ensure all lights extinguished)
    * borrow a good screen
    * make sure it's correctly set up
    * practice getting the projection right with a less-loved film (use a spare or test reel if possible)
    * test various camcorder setups, positions, etc. (suggest autofocus is turned OFF)

    Good luck!
