I don't now how to canvert files to avi, but I do know how to convert files to MPEG. Download TMPGEnc. Just go to this link - http://www.tmpgenc.net/files/TMPGEnc-2.59.47.155-Plus-ENInstaller-DL.exe
and you should start downloading it automatically. The program is pretty self explanatory, but when you open the program the first window that you see will have 3 pop down menus (Video-CD,Super Video-CD, and DVD). You want to stay under the first pop down menu (Video-CD) and click on NTSC. Once you have done that then click next.

The next screen you see will have 2 columns at the top, Video File and Audio File. Click on the browse button on the Video File column. Search for your video that you want to convert to MPEG. Then click next. On the next screen, unless you are familar with the program or don't want to get confused, click next again. On this screen just click next again. On this last screen, there will be 1 column called Output File. On this column, it will show you the output path of your video file. You will have to create a new name for your file. For example: say you wanted to convert a video file called 8Miles to MPEG format, on the output file column, when it shows you the output path of the file you have to give it a new name of something like 8Mile 1, or 8Mile new. Just give it a new name that you will remember. Once you have click next and it will start coverting it. I know part of this can sound a bit confusing because it is hard to explain some things sometimes, if you have any trouble or are confused at all on anything reply to this message. Hope this helps you,

    Collin

OK I had the same problem I downloaded some ASF's from kazaa and wanted to place them on a dvd.
Tmpgenc is so slow with asf so I went to kazaa en searched for virtualdub. you wil need the 1.4c version.
I think this is a crack because all other versions do not open the *.ASF this due to microsoft copyrights issues.
If you have the 1.4c (ASF) version install it
and open the .ASF file go to VIDEO.
    click FULL PROCESSING MODE.
Go to VIDEO again and click COMPRESSION.
I use DIVX 5.02 click OK.
Go to FILE and select SAVE AVI now save your avi file.
If you click OK it will automaticly start to reencode.
This will take up to 30 minutes depending on the size of the ASF.
    When VirtualDub is ready.
Open TMPGenc and open the generated AVI file.
now press start and watch how little time you need to reencode about 1/11th of the time for a ASF.
