how to convert .m2v and .avi files into .mpg???

    My problem is NOT playback or burning related. I like to make animated .GIF's from music videos and video clips using Adobe ImageReady but it will not recognize files that are .m2v or .avi. Changing the extension from .m2v to .mpg doesn't work either so I'm left with converting said format into .mpg.

    Can Adobe Premiere convert files? If not can someone recommend a good video converter?
