*HELP* How do I STOP users on the computer from viewing video files (.mpg, .mpeg, .mov, etc...)? Are there any way at all to stop the computer from reading video files? There's NO USE in changing the Settings tabs of video players (Windows Media Players, RealOne Player, Nero Showtime, etc...) or even disable Windows's file types settings... simply bcoz these settings are not locked with passwords, and therefore can be easily altered by whoever.... plus it's hopeless to delete/remove these video players coz anyone can easily re-install them... There's already internet filtering and monitoring softwares installed on the computer... but these softwares does NOT disable video playback... any suggestions anyone? All help is deeply appreciated.... Thanx!
Thanx for replying... I want to STOP downloaded videos from playing on the computer... any way of stopping the computer from reading/opening/playing these videos? Video files were downloaded via limewire (that's my other problem... which I've posted in AfterDawn's 'Windows-P2P software' forum)... and played using Windows Media Player, RealOne Player & Nero Showtime... No use in changing limewire's settings as anyone could reset them again... no use in deleting video file types from Windows as they can be easily setup again... no use in deleting limewire or the video players as these people would re-install them... oooohh... frustrated... frustrated... frustrated... & lost!
Sorry... I wouldn't mind knowing&learning how to stop STREAMING ones from playing as well... Thanx... very much!
I take it a lot of people use this computer? As for blocking the downloaded ones, I need to think more about that. Will answer shortly. The streaming ones can be blocked by something like NetNanny, Child Control or Child Protector. They are designed to block access so that kids don't see objectionable things. I know NetNanny can be set up to block file types. So I'm reasonably sure it would block streaming videos. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
Didn't take me as long as I thougt it would. I found two programs that will block access: Access Manager for Windows http://www.softstack.com/ AccessAdministrator http://www.filesland.com/companies/getfreefile/AccessAdministrator.html While the second one seems to be more popular, the first one seems the better of the two. IMHO. Use of one of those with the other programs I mentioned, you can block just about anything!
Ooh jolly!!! yea... surely didn't take you long... I've "internet filtering softwares"... 3 of them... Net Nanny, ContentProtect & CYBERSitter... I agree with you, they do filter website contents... BUT really slacking in filtering the all important P2P downloads... it's either they completely BLOCK them or not! I was hoping there's a good P2P filtering software... which has the option of BLOCK video files alone (as most porn are file types .mpg, .mpeg, .mov etc)... BUT does NOT block other file types such as .mp3, .wma etc... have been searching high & low... but NOTHING surfaced! How *disappointing*... Many thanx for your 2 suggestions... am checking them out right now...
The last two that I suggested do not block the download but will block access to the files and programs.
I've checked out the 2 softwares you suggested, Dolphin... The thing is... if I block the program which runs the video files, let's say Windows Media Player or RealOne Player, then it could be unfair to users when they want to listen to music files... I was actually hoping there's something within the Windows program which can be altered/deleted so as not to be able to read/run video files... Any idea?
I don't believe there is anything within Windows that you could do. At least nothing that I am aware of. Perhaps a call to Microsoft or e-mail to them might give you an answer. You could use the programs mentioned, install [bold]just[/bold] a player for audio. But, here again, (unless you restricted all installs) something could be installed to view videos. Let me know what you come up with, if anything!

Good luck! I don't think that will work. All that would do is remove the association for the file type. That can easily be restored. The registry edits that are talked about are the same as what the programs do. Disables them. I would find it safer to use a program than the registry for this. Anyways, keep me posted as to the answer you receive and anything that you can come up with.
