I'm embarrased to say how long I've been working on this problem and can't make it work. I'm running an AMD 3500 64 chip at 1.8GHz with 1 Gig memory. 2 optical drives 1 burner Win XP I simply want to import video into an editing program. I have 40 hours of home video I recorded on to my DVR then burned onto DVD. I load the DVD into my DVD drive and try to import the file and it isnt recognized as a valid file type. So I downloaded a ripper program and have converted the file to MPEG and I cannot import it into any editing program. Have tried to import into Microsoft Movie Maker and it won't recognize it. I tried reading the file with GSpot codec info appliance to find what codecs were involved with the process, no luck. As a matter of fact I've tried using GSpot on several files and DVD videos, both commercial movies and the home movies I had burned to DVD and no information is provided. I can't seem to render any of the files. So I've got DVD's that I can't edit, download into a file that isn't supported, and doesn't register with GSpot to give me some stinking clue what is going on. I'm guessing this is about format and CODECs but I guess I don't know enough to solve this problem. I had hoped this new wiz bang computer would help a lot in this area, but sheeeeesh it's proving too frustrating for me. So is this even possible? Strip the video off a DVD into some usable format that would allow me to import it into an editing program? Below is a list of codecs loaded on my computer. You'd think that editing a little home movie footage wouldn't be such an impossibility, but you'd be wrong. HELP.
Well you do have a Mpeg-2 decoder installed so you should be able to see the Video at least on a DVD..... I think the Problem is More of the Software you are useign as to a problem with not have the Right Codecs... If you are useing "Windows Movie Maker" then that is your problem Right there because becides being a Crappy assed piece of Sh*t editor it also doesn"t support VOB or Mpeg-2 files and doesn"t support the Dolby AC3 found in DVD"s and will only output your Files in the Crappy WMV format which is not what you want to save your Video files as if you want high Quality and if you want to put the Files back on to DVD..... All you need to edit the VOB files is a native Mpeg editor like "Womble Mpeg2VCR" or "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005" both will let you edit the VOB files in any Way you want and let you add some effects and Filters and Transitions between Scenes and save the edited VOB files as a Mpeg-2 file without any quality loss then to put the edited file back on to DVD you Just load it into a DVD authoring program and add your menu"s and Chapters and Burn to DVD.... If you just want to do Basic Cutting and Joining of Clips you can do this with a Basic Editor like "Chopper XP" or "Cuttermaran" or "Mpeg2Cut" which are Freeware but very Limited in that they can do.... You might also want to install some DVD Playing Software if you haven"t allready because then your system will recognize the VOB files and be able to play them back...... Cheers
