Our Hi-8 camcorder is broken and we do not plan to replace it with another Hi-8. I'm thinking about to have them converted to DVD with one of many online services, but I do not want them to edit the tapes for me. How do I or is it possible to edit the DVDs?

    Thanks.

I should make my question more specific. After I have all our Hi-8 tapes converted to DVDs, which software will you recommend to use for editing the DVDs and still keep or possibily remake my own menus?

    Thanks,

    There are several steps here.

    1) You can't edit DVD files. So first you would have to convert them to MPEG2 or AVI and edit them using an authoring program.
    2) Then you would need to convert back into DVD files and create menus.

How complex is the editing you require? For simple edits (and converting) you could use TMPGEnc. http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/tmpgenc_basic_guide.cfm

DVD Lab is great for making menus, but it needs the file in MPEG2 format (or DVD files). It doesn't do editing. http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvdlab_review.cfm

Have a look in the Guides section and see what tools people suggest. Most tools have evaluation copies available for download.
