I am looking for a program, preferably free, that can extract the audio portion of a video file. I am needing to do some editing of the audio separately, and then I will subsequently add the audio back. Any suggestions?

    AviDemux.
    Assuming it's an AVI file.
Drag the video onto the window.
Click 'File' > 'Properties' and note the audio codec (e.g. mp3).
    Click 'Audio' > 'Save'
    Give it a name + extension, e.g. audio.mp3

To load a new audio track, click 'Audio' > 'Main Track'
Select the Source (external mp3) and browse to the file location.

Save the video with a new name + extension e.g. newfile.avi
