The only way you can connect to your friends XBOX that i know of is if:

    1) He has his xbox softmodded with Unleash X or EvoX installed on it

    2) His xbox is connected to your network, or directly to your computer (via crossover cable).

Im about 99% sure that you cannot use his Xbox as a server - this is where you can use ftp://username:password@host.com through your web browser to connect to it.
However, why not give it a try. Make sure his xbox is on, then find out what his IP Address (He can tell you over MSN or something), then type in this into your firefox or Internet explorer:

    [bold]ftp://xbox:xbox@yourfriendsxboxip[/bold]
Obviously change the last bit to the actual IP.

What i can say is you cannot, and im 120% sure of this, connect to his xbox using an FTP program, if its not connected to your home network in some way.

Yes, FTP programs are used to connect to servers. An xbox isnt a server. Why dont you try it?

Open up FTP, and then in the server name type in your friends xbox IP, then in the username and password box type "xbox" all in lowercase.

Your friends xbox must be modded in order to FTP into it. Post back here and tell me the results of it.

You cant use your xbox as a server. Your friend can FTP into your xbox and vice versa, but they have to be on the same network as far as i know.

Well if by files, you mean modded maps, then why dont you copy the modded maps onto your computer, and then send them to your mates, or upload them to an actual server which can be accessed by FTP?

An xbox doesnt work like a computer. It doesnt just allow incoming connections. You can't use your xbox like a server, but whatever you want to share, i suggest buying a domain/FTP, and uploading it all to that. You can then give the web address to your mates, who can then download whatever it is they want.

EDIT - Unless you know where to get free hosting, in which case tell me aswell ;-)

Ye it does work like a computer it just runs differently and uses different file types and system. you can even put a version of windows on to your xbox. and there is a way of using you xbox as a server its been done b4 theres sites that show that they've done it but it dont tell you how to do it? and that what i need to know.

And it does allow incoming and outgoing connections easily ive used an xbox version of linux called Dyne bolic which allows you to surf the web and it worked for me so it does.

Even if the xbox is conected straight to the broadband modem through DHCP is will get an IP shown on the dashboard. (if it isn't shown here it'll be in the settings) First make sure that the xbox is set to DHCP and conected right to the modem,or though a hub or router using DHCP.

I'm just saying this cause I presume this is the way you wanted it done.

Now once the xbox is setup to the modem through DHCP,reboot the xbox so that it grabs an IP. Once it shows an IP in the dashboard you know you have it right. Test it out by downloading a skin or something,on a dash that has this option that is. If it works then the settings are right.

Now that the xbox is online through DHCP,all your buddy has to do is have your IP address that is shown on the dash.

eg...if your xbox DHCP IP addy is 68.149.24.135 then this is the number that you send your buddy. All he has to do is use that in an ftp client or even use the browser by typing ftp://xbox:xbox@68.149.24.135

    Simple as that.

If your buddy want to,he can run an ftp server on his pc and have you able to grab his stuff by letting you have a user account to it. Then all you wouldhave to do is use a file manager like the ones in avalaunch and unleashed and just use those as an ftp client and connect to his server that way.

I hope this clears up alot of things.

Ye i have it setup like that but the ip i get is a local ip of 10.0.0.6 which is what the DHCP assigned so how the hell would he be able to connect to that?
