I use nero 6 ultra edition. It takes me 2.5 hours to convert a 352*240 avi (1.75 hr clip) to a 720*480 vob format. The burn only takes 20 min. Anyways, I just wanted to know what major factors (equipment/software) would help transcode quicker?

Sorry, I can't really help as I don't do any dl of AVI files and conversions. I thought you meant transcoding like useing dvd shrink or nero recode2 to compress the files to fit on a dvd5. Your cpu and memory should be sufficient. Burn time at 4x should be around 12 min and 8x should be around 8 min.

You might give DVDSanta a try. I can convert an avi movie to dvd format in a little over an hour with good video quality.
