It flickers too much and the screen is wayyy too small on a standard def TV. The resolution doesn't really impact the speed of linux by much, just as it doesn't make a difference when playing games.

I'm looking for a way to run the PS3 through VGA cables so I can connect it to my monitor. Does anyone know of a DIY to build a component to VGA cable? I really envy the 360 for having a VGA cable as an accessory. I remember the PS2 Linux bundle came with one, and could be used on the PS3 as well but it's impossible to find anymore.

And I switchedto FC8 today, and got Win98 back on as well as DOSBox and the doom port to run again. Now I just need that VGA cable...

Thanks "confuzion" I appreaciate the quick answer because I was losing my mind for a second, I had just installed a 250 GB drive and wanted to install linux to try and get the most out of the system, but it kept looping but I am also downloading the Yellow Dog, I am at 15% and it says 2 hours and 45 minutes but it has been saying that for about an hour now.....Go Figure

no problem i finally got my yellow dog to resume with the new getright, it finally got unstuck from 2 gigs, now 2 more gigs to go haha. these urls might help u if u use mirrors

    http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/yellowdog-6.0-DVD_20080207.iso

    http://mirror.anl.gov/yellowdog/iso/yellowdog-6.0-DVD_20080207.iso

    ftp://ftp.fsn.hu/pub/CDROM-Images/yellowdog/yellowdog-6.0-DVD_20080207.iso

by the way when u put that 250 in and u partitioned your ps3 for otheros how many gb's did it let u assign to it, mine only let me use 10 and i was wondering if they let u use more if u have a 250 installed

Thanks again for the link and about the partitions as did mine (only allow 10 gig's) Now this is not something offical but I would guess that one would only need apppox 10 or so gigs to install an OS, I mean on my desktop I have a 20 Gig primary drive and I keep everything on my D:\ (80 GB appox) & E:\ (500 GB) drives. With it being secondary tp the main purpose of the system I guess it enough.....?

i would think it would be enough but i read somewhere that after u install everything it takes up like 9 gigs or something, i guess we'll find out lol.

im really looking forward to putting firefox in my yellowdog as well as emulators for my nintendo games(just to show off to my friends) and also using flash files.

i also built my own them for my ps3 if u wanna check it www.melodicmizeryrecords.com click on confuzion then the ps3 tab

look for the cd disc that came with your computer, i think its called a restore disk itll turn your computer back to how it was the first day you bought it and wipe everything out.

I'm trying to understand what you mean. Do you want to get rid of the Linux partition on the drive to make more room for the PS3?

Just format and allocate all of the space to the PS3.

Or are you trying to install another OS?

Oh, very easy. Though if you care, try installing another Linux distro, preferably Yellow Dog Linux (6.0). I've tried many distros on my PS3, but YDL stuck out as more supported for obvious reasons.

But if you really want Fedora 8, just start the install as you normally would. There's really no need to pre-format your Other OS partition since it will tend to format before it installs.

Well, I'm now very interested in this whole scheme... but I have absolutely no idea what I should or would use another OS for, so...

I dunno, what's the point of putting another OS on my PS3? What do you all use them for?

And what are some of the differences between these Linux OSes? (Like Fedora vs. Yellow Dog, etc.)

Anyway, thanks for indulging a PS3 noob. (Seriously, I got the sweet thing a month ago or so, and I've been mind-gasming over all the media features it's got. Sure plays DVDs better than my Xbox 360...)

Speaking of which, another random question (no need to answer if it's a BS question): Is there a reason why my 360 only shows DVDs in 4:3 aspect? It does it even with my widescreen DVDs.

    EDIT: Potty mouth, my bad.

    HELP !
When I enter in the first part without quotes it is saying linux64: not found
I am not very familiar with this sort of process so I am guessing I did something wrong.
I put the otheros.bld file properly in the otheros folder within the PS3 folder on my USB drive, and plugged it into my PS3.
I then backed up my PS3 data, formatted the hard disk to allot 10GB to Other OS, and installed the Fedora kboot.
Following this I downloaded the Fedora 8 off the first link and burned it at 6x speed on a blank DVD. I inserted this into my PS3 while kboot: was flashing, and restarted my console.
However when I typed in 'linux64 text xdriver=fbdev' (w/o quotes!), I ran into this problem.

Someone please let me know what's going on ASAP!
