My sister has an old canon sd camera (forgot which number, i think its a 200, and whenever she takes a picture, the focused object is nice and pretty, but sometimes the background is really dark. I dont know if it is a camera setting or simply not enough lighting in the background. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Try to shoot without the flash. It just makes things worse, unless background is close to the target.

Maybe just add a Speedlite or an equivalent add on flash device, there are plenty of cheap ones on EBay.

    Hi,
using a stronger flash will make the focused object overexposed
if you are after a correctly exposed background, my solution is
to use an additional slave flash and aim it at the background.
    (not at the primary object)
I'm using an old canon ae-1.

Another possible way to balance out the entire pic is to use an external or shoe mount flash that has the ability to point up into the ceiling for so that it can bounce light through-out the entire room.
