I've tried to find this answer googling and searching in afterdawn but I guess I'm looking under the wrong keywords. I get answers that are similar but not what I want.

I'm sure the answers already been provided and someone's going to berate me for not reading the guides or searching. Honest, I've done it.

If someone could please direct me to the place where it tells me how to make .AVI files from the DVD Decrypt (file mode) rips I've got on my hard drive? That is directories full of ISO and VOB files?

The plan is to get them back to about 700meg so's I can burn them to a data dvd and archive them.

Then I can delete the dvd decrypt dirs and recover all those gigabytes.

    regards,

    ab :)

as you know converting from one format to another is a loss of quality...

    use gordian knot / autoGK

Yes, I figured it probably would mean some loss. I hope it is not much. What else can I do? DVDDecrypt seems to be about the only way to rip them.

I want to rip 'em, make a backup copy and also have this .avi copy as a sort of 'belt and braces' second last-resort back-up copy.

I'll get gordian knot and check it out. Thanks again.

Well I got autogk and installed it and ran it and it looks like it works on one VOB at a time. Is that right? Isn't there a better way than that?

Well if you don't want to re-rip what you have run them through DVDShrink and under preferences tell it not to split files then save it uncompressed.

How does that help? I did use Shrink and made an ISO and I put that to Fair Use Wizard.

It confused me a bit and all I got out of it was one half of the original dvd.

I've figured out that's one of the two menu choices. It showed me two streams or something in the beginning and I chose the first one for processing without really knowing what was going on.

If I'd chosen to process both I wonder what I'd have got? Both menu choices in the avi, one after the other? Because I guess what's going on is an avi won't keep menu choices will it?

Keeping my back-ups as .AVI files will save me a lot of space but I will lose all menus... right?

And these dvd's are my kids (that's why keeping copies is important, kids trash everything) and they've got lots of menu stuff, not like a dvd movie.

It's still cool. I can still do it.

But back to where we were: I've done the DVDShrink thing you suggest and gordian knot doesn't pick up the ISO at all and Fair Use Wizard did what I've just said.

So where I'm at now is I can get .AVI backups with not much trouble but I lose menu choices. I go dvddecrypt - dvdshrink - fair use.

If anyone can suggest any improvements on this procedure I'd be pleased to hear about it.

    regards,

    ab :)

The easiest way, IMHO, is to pay your 60 bucks and get DVD Fab HD Platinum.
