I am using Windows XP 2.4GHz 533 P4 processor with 250GB 7200rpm HD and 1GB 533MHz RAM memory. I still get dropped frames on video capture from Mini DV Camcorder connected via Firewire IEEE 1394. What measures can I take to avoid that? What is the best software with least overhead to prevent dropped frames. I do disable unnecessary services also. Is there anything else that can be done?

    1. Capture to the hard drive that does not contain your operating system.
    2. Defragment your hard drive.
    3. Don't have anything running in the back ground (you already did)
    4. Use one of these very simple freeware capture programs that don't take any memory. A couple of them are here: http://www.digitalvideoclub.com/downloads/freedownloads.php My favourite in the list is WinDV, an executable of only 92kB(!!)
