Sorry if this is the wrong Forum or if this is old news. I searched but found no answer. Can someone provide a recipe for taking an LP record and ripping it onto a computer so that I can made a CD? I have a good turntable, receiver with Phono jacks, etc. I know how to plug it in to the computer sound card I am just wondering what software to use and how to combine it all. Thanks in advance! Michael
This is the correct place. I concur. That can be used for free. I would make mp3s as well. Get the Lame plug in. It is a pain in the ass but effort well spent. If you have any other questions this would be the place. The VBR mode using the extream setting to the far right will produce a 'transparent' version taking very little disk space. MP3 CDs hold 150-200 tunes.
Hello All and thank you for the quick replies. I will give Audacity a try however I have read that it is a pain to break up the tracks etc. Just wondered if there is a pay program out there that would make it much easier that could: 1) Break up the unput into tracks automatically 2) Find the LP info automatically for me so I don't have to enter the CD Title, artist, song list etc. I have about 300 LPs I want to convert. Am I smokin' crack or what? Thanks! Michael
I can dis recommend Roxio/Sonic it sucks! The problem with viny rips are there is no data for the database engine to find. You will need to enter the artist and album then hope what you have in in the database you are using. The auto lookup playing the music should not work for vinyl. The CD tunes have ID tags. I suggest a card capture app. They allow audio capture from any source not just the mic jack. Why pay for an internet audio capture as well? I started on your journey and took a different route so I will cut out on this one. I can say you can tag later there are apps that with artist and album they will fill in the title info when ever you you want to do that.
Have you heard the quality of vinyl lately? Is it really worth going thru all this for the vinyl quality. If you want free you can try downloading songs from youtube, not always the best quality but there is a great selection of older music on there.
mjgillen: I have been through this myself. I did about 700 albums. There really is no easy way to do it. I used Nero's Wave Editor to do all my recording & separating of tracks. Along with cleaning up all the pops & crackles. Once you get a workflow going that you feel comfortable with, it moves along pretty smooth. Using Audacity is similar to Nero's Wave Editor. Once you have the file created by recording, you can edit out all the pops & crackles. You then just highlight 1 song, right-click & choose "Save as" & then name the song & save to a new folder. I would always delete that song to make it easier to do the next song. When you have all the songs separated & close Audacity, it will ask you if you want to save your changes, DO NOT SAVE YOUR CHANGES. Click on "No", this will keep your original file intact if you ever need it again. Just make sure you use a good file system when separating the tracks or it will get confusing. Name of Artist> Name of Album> Name of Track. Remember to number the tracks, otherwise they will be automatically in alphabetical order. Once I had my files all set up I used dbPoweramp to convert them to MP3's. I then would drag & drop them into Windows Media Player(this is about the only thing I used WMP for). Then I would just highlight all the songs, right-click & choose "Find Album Info". It's been a long time but I think maybe I first had to right-click & choose "Advanced Tag Editor". This is where you add the Album title to all the track tags. I found this to be the easiest way to fill the tags & automatically add the Album art to the folder. Hope this helps a little & saves you some grief. It can get to be a long & tedious process. Good Luck!
Thanks DigiDave! Excellent write up. I'll start the process and take my time. The old albums are worth it! Thanks to all the people who replied with thier input. Michael
This is a good point. If you are going to put them to CD's, you might as well do it while they are still in the wav(loseless) format.
Never mind, I found older versions as OldApps.com Which one is recommended? 1.53, 2000, or 2000 v1.1? Thanks! Michael
