hi,to all, Can anyone in the forum tell me step by step in setting up a dreambox 500c with all the programs that will cause it to work. Thank you very much it is a good forum and I will reckomen it to anyone
first you need to know about your pc,does it run on windows xp or windows vista(if it runs on windows vista its not suitable for flashing a box,so you need a pc that runs on windows xp) if you your pc runs on windows xp and is new or recent it wont have a 9 pin seriel port at the back(a 9 pin seriel port is what you have on the back of your box, your pc needs to have the same port)if its an old model it may have a 9 pin seriel port at the back.you will need a 9 pin null modem cable to hook your box up to to your pc(if your pc is old and has a 9 pin seriel port this is the only cable you will need)however if your pc is newer than you will also need an usb to seriel adaptor(you connect one end of the null madem cable to the dm500c and the other end connects to the usb adaptor, and the usb end of the adaptor connects to your pc in any usb port)the usb to seriel cable should come with a disk containing a driver(this helps the box talk to the pc)if you got no disk you need to go online and download a driver that will run your usb to seriel adaptor. now check on all the above first and get back to me and we can go from there mate ok.
Thanks piopat, I am exactly like Echo10 and your reply is very useful. I don't even know what is flashing, from reading different posts it looks like copying software from pc to box. I am waiting for my box DM500c and once I receive will join you guys. One question though I have vista on my laptop, should I format and install xp or I can install both windows on one system. Cheers
as i said to echo vista is not compatable,so if you could maybe get the use of a friends computer that has windows xp on it or try buying an old desktop computer with windows xp on it(they come pretty cheap)and they will have a 9 pin seriel port at the back, which makes life a little easier.flashing is what we call it when your pc and box or connected together by a cable and the software is sent from the pc into the box .you can change your pc software from vista to xp but i would not reccomend that(its easier and cheaper to buy an old desktop computer from your local free ads paper).
Ihave to say I have used XP and vista for different boxes including dream box and actually found vista slightly handier once you use the disk that comes with the cable adopter (disk=driver)
Thanks piopat, I have received my box today and I’ll be setting it up soon. I have arranged all the tools needed i.e. laptop with windows xp, 9 point cable with usb drivers. I assume the first step would be image flashing (I just wonder why there is no image already installed on box). Could you please let me know which image should I flash? I am thinking of flashing Neutrino V2.1. Can I use universal DreamUp V1.3.3.4 (which downloaded from this website http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/en/downloads) to flash Neutrino image on DM500c box? Many thanks.
dreamup is ok but the image depends on(if it covers your area)meaning i live in ireland in cork but i have used dw1 and dw2 and dw2.1(dw means digitalworldz)what i mean is say if your cable company is virgin(you need an image that will unlock virgin)but that said most images cover the uk and ireland.if your in ireland say in dublin on ntl you have no hope at the moment of getting your box to work, but if your in the uk you are ok.dw covers most, but there are more images but follow my instructions and you can change a flash if it wont unlock your channnels, download a few images and try them one by one(as i dont know where you live i cant say which one).click on the link in my signature and download the images that you think might work, and try them(go for the newest date,as they are the updated versions of the firmware)dreamup is correct so its just the firmware or image, then folllow my instructions. if you need more info let me know.
uovervinn as i said to echo vista is not really compatable(you may find a driver that is compatable if you are extremly lucky,a driver is a program that helps your pc talk to your box through a cable and also to put the program needed on to your box to unlock channels). if you have a mate that has an older pc with windows xp on it(perhaps you can use it)or you can buy an old desktop computer and it will have windows xp and a 9 pin seriel port at the back. in which case your sorted and an old pc comes cheap or free(as often people throw them out thinking they have no use)come back to me when you have a pc with xp and a null modem cable and of course the loader and firmware or image and i will talk you through it.
Thanks a lot piopat, Yesterday I tried to flash my box with dw2.1 (I live in the UK - England). The main problem I had was communication between computer and box. I used my own laptop (with vista) and also an old laptop (with XP) but no use. DreamUp was not detecting my new box, the USB to 9 pin serial convertor which I bought had driver cd with it for vista and XP which I installed. I also checked the COM port in computer and was using the right COM. Anyway nothing worked and I then decided to use Ethernet cable, for this purpose I established a small network and was managed to detect the box. I used DCC (dreambox control centre) to flash dw2.1 image but after flashing there was a message that “Image flashed successfully, now dreambox will restart automatically if it doesn’t start automatically then do it manually”. I tried to do it manually but power off button was not working, I have now tried everything but it is sort of stuck (green light always on) now, box doesn’t turn off and even after switching off & on from power supply doesn’t solve this problem. I thought to flash it again through Ethernet cable but now my network doesn’t detect box . Well keeping story short, I have ended up with a stuck box and don’t know what to do. May be if I use 9pin cable directly to my laptop without any USB then probably it will detect my box. I’ll buy another 9pin cable today and try it, I know a friend who has computer with 9pin serial port and will use that computer. I am not sure whether this will sort my problem but will be very thankful if you have any advice. Cheers.
i have never flashed a dreambox with an ethernet cable and dream control center so i could not advise you on that, but i had a dreambox that was stuck after a flashing and i went back in to dreamup and erased the flash and flashed it again with another image and it was ok.when you installed the seriel to usb adaptor disk did you install it in the laptop with xp on it and did you set it for xp.as you say you have a friend that has an older pc with xp and a 9 pin seriel port so try it on that, erase the flash and try the same image again or a different one,you can erase last flash with dreamup.
Thanks Piopat, at last I was able to flash my dreambox successfully. I really appreciate your help. Problem I had with box detection was due to 9 point F-F converter. I bought new null modem cable from Maplin and it worked fine with both laptops (My new laptop with Vista on it via USB – 9 point converter and with old laptop which had XP and 9 point serial port). Another problem I had was with image dw2.1, it didn’t work for me. I tried 4 to 5 times and then at the end flashed dw2.0 image. This image is working fine. I am now trying to understand recording and movie player features through wireless. These features seem to be quite interesting and I may need your help again in future. Anyway once again thanks for your help and support. Cheers.
