Hi to every reader. I have an old workstation (2x Pentium Pro 200, 128MB RAM), using SCSI storage subsystem with Yamaha CRW 8824s CD writer (8x8x24). OS is Windows NT 4.0 Workstation SP6+. I take a great care to keep the software system as clean and arranged as possible. I avoid installing or replacing any applications unless I really have to. But now I have to. I use Nero 5.5.8.0 which serves me fine trough all these years, but recently I began to use some lossless audio codecs. They have plugins for Nero, but all those plugins minimally require Nero 5.5.9.0. After checking some OEM CDs which came with mz some another writers I bought, I found that I actually have Nero 5.5.9.0 and 5.5.9.9. Now the question is: How to CORRECTLY replace this current installation of Nero with a newer one? The imperative is NOT to damage the system (registry, system libraries etc.). Can I just install newer version on top of the current one (thus overwriting it), or do I have to uninstall the current version first? Is there some special procedure required, some special uninstalling tools needed?
Hello HamaZ. I know of Nero's cleaning tools to completely remove Nero from your system, but i think they only work for Nero's ver 6 and 7. I know that you have had good results with ver 5, but perhaps you could consider an upgrade? Other than that you could/should unistall the older version, reboot and then install the newer one. To keep the registry clean i use 'Registry Mechanic'. I normally do a basic clean-up once a week and a full housekeeping session once a month.
Thank you for the reply. I also believe that procedure of uninstalling & rebooting & installing should be just fine, but I am not sure. I have found a "Nero 5 Cleaning Tool" somewhere on the Internet, but that is how it is called there where I found it. The tool itself nowhere mentiones the version of Nero for which it is intended, so it could be as well for Nero 6 or 7. Who knows. Using Nero 6 is out of the question. Nero 5.5.8.0 was sufficient except for the plugin support. I see that even Neros 5.5.9.0+ include some new components which I do not need, like Nero Express, DVD writing support etc. Does anyone else have suggestion how to properly upgrade?
