how to use cheats in vampire masquerade

    ok i want to use some cheats in vampire masquerade but the thing is i dont know how to use them just about all sits iv been to say this

    Just start the game with -console added to the shortcut command line. Press tilde (~) to open the console in game, and use these cheats to do various things.
    i don't know what that means or how to do it so can some ples help me
