To back up the newer protections such as SafeDisc 3/4 you'll absolutely need one of three burners in order to correctly reproduce the protections - Plextor Premium, LiteOn 52327S or Asus 5232AS. Any other burner will require the use of emulation which requires certain software to be installed on any PC that you want to play the game on.

Just wondering what is needed in a drive to be able to back up Safedisc 4 games as both the liteon and Asus drives are pretty cheap drives? Arent there any newer drives that can back them up?

Unlike DVDs where the protection is stripped out, PC game prtections have to be read then written back to the disc. Both need to be done extremely accurately and the drive must be EFM capable in order to correctly write the protection back to disc because when you launch the game the protection files that get placed on your hard drive with the game will take a good hard look a the disc to make sure it's legitimate. If the drive can't accurately reproduce the protection then you have to use emulation which basically helps the verification process. The crappy part of emulation is that you have to have that software on your machine to play the game and as the protections evolve they look for emulation software and refuse to the run the game if they detect any.

As for which newer models can do it - I'm not sure. It's been a while since I've kept up on EFM capable drives.

yes dvd pc games have copy protection, normally safe disk and can be a pain to make a copy of as you need to download mini/midi images that are fixed(normally mounted via alcohol ect.the dvd copy protection also blacklists copy programs and virtual drives but programs such as safe disk 4 hide can make the drives and programs invisible.i use it and never had any problems making backups you just need to download the crack

Yup. They use all the protections CD based games do. The real bummer is there are even fewer EFM capable DVD burners than there are CD burners.

The recommending of downloading pirated games and using cracks doen't fly around here so let's refrain from doing so in the future. Not trying to be hard on you buddy, just letting you know ;)

hmmmmm ok mr moderator, point taken however i was not in anyway shape or form encouraging the download of pirated games.mearly the way in which to back up your legitamate games so they do not get damaged(i have brought all my games from reputable games stores).as for the cracks that i said of,well they are only so you can then use your back up copy if your original is damaged rather than shell out another 30 notes(plus of course, using a crack means you no longer need the disk in your dvd drive).im sorry if this was all taken the wrong way but if you read the thread closely you will see that what i say is true and i was only replying to the question of backing up your games.

I used SafeDisc4 Hider to back up Call Of Duty 2. It works great. I even tried to install the game using my backed up images and alcohol 120 + safedisc4 hider just to make sure I don't have to buy the game again and it worked beautifully.
