Just got a new PC (a1030n)....Everything is great so far, with the exception of Lighscribe burning. On the disc that came with the pc, when I attempted to burn the label, it resulted in gray circles rather than the intended image.
After over 8 hours of dealing with HP through their online chat and phone service, nothing is solved. The techs all told me that installing the update from the HP site would solve the problem. So after eventually having to do a complete system restore just to get the update to install, it still doesnt work. When I attempt to burn the image, the disc ejects and I get a message saying the disc is not recognized, when it is an HP lightscribe disc.
Im running out of ideas here, looking for some suggestions as to what to do to solve the problem, or at least determine the source of the problem. Is there a definitive way to tell if it is the drive or not?

I have an HP dvd640i and have the exact same issue with the lightscribe feature. I just emailed HP's tech support yestarday. I have attempted everything.
    I have updated the firmware.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the sure thing labeling software.
I have updated the Lightscribe print engine.
I have used different types of media.
I have updated the sure thing labeling software.

I work in the IT profession, and I am thinking it is a hardware issue with the drive. I am hoping that HP will RMA the drive and give me a new one. If you find a solution to your problem I would be interested in know what happened. Good Luck.

My solution was to buy a new drive.......HP was totally unhelpful....They wanted a credit card number to return the drive.....Wouldnt work with me at all, they can burn in hell.

I have the same HP 640-c,until I pulled it out and replaced it with my Benq 1620 with well over 1500+ burns.
300+ on the fly without a coaster.

That HP 640c coastered out my first OTF burn and 2 others discs in the safer, burn from Hardrive.3 coasters in 2 days. My benq only coastered out 1 all year!

The compatability isn't as good as my benq's,but decent. The compatability is the critical area for me. I print my dvd's,so the lightscribe feature isn't as critical for me.
