    I recently bought the HP DVD Writer 740i Lightscribe (although the system identifies it as 740c). It burns cdr-s great. The Lightscribe thing is kind of cool, but very slow. About 17 minutes to make one.

    I finally bought some DVD-Rs at Staples and it doesn't recognize them. However my Dell notebook has a burner that does recognize the same discs. I pulled the HP drive and am returning it today. I just joined the forum but was hoping for a quick recommendation on a replacement.

    Update, I took the drive and exchanged it for the same model. It still won't recognize the DVD-R format, or at least the discs I bought (Staple's brand). I'd be happy to hear any suggestions...

    Don't everyone jump in at once like on my first post:)

    I have an HP640c lightscribe I bought about a month ago from WalMart. Have you tried another brand of media, maybe it just does not like that brand. I have not had a problem with mine, I use DVD-
    R TY, Verbatim, Fuji and TDK.

    I'll pick up another spindle. The drive seems very nice aside from this issue. I was hoping to get some brands where folks had better luck. Thanks.

    Dont buy Staples media. Its generally not of good qaulity. Buy something like Fugifilm. Are you sure you didnt buy a HP 640c? Theres no such thing as a 740..lol.

    ...BTW.. Make sure you have the latest firmware.

    The Staples media works fine in my notebook. I bought a spindle of HP DVD-R. I figure their own media should work. Well it doesn't.

    I called HP tech support and they didn't have a clue. I'll tell CompUSA I want a refund. I bought an NEC3520A from newegg and all is well with it.

    Oh, and yes it is the 640c.

    If you're using DVD-R then that is your problem. You should be using DVD+R media.

    @Nick2

    Why is the problem that it is -R media? The HP640c supports both +R or -R formats with no problem. The drive just did not like that brand of media.

    this is just another case of crappy media, i have found that a lot of HP media are just as bad as the staples branded one~

    best of luck, try some GOOD media in my sig. i do not own a lightscribe as of yet, but, am looking into it for a future purchase; rather than getting a refund, if you feel that it is not worth your time to keep trying, i think with better media you could get it up and running like your nec~ :)
