I am having a problem with my dvd burner. It will play dvd's cd's and install software, but when I insert a blank dvd it shows up as a cd and there is no capacity, free space or used space available on the dvd. I also noticed that it is a dvd ram drive through start menu when there is no dvd inserted but when I insert a dvd it changes to cd drive. I can't get any support from HP... and would like to get it working.

Thanks in advance to any replies

I have one of those too and Mine will read a DVD or CD but it wont read blank media at all
I went through HP for support and got nowhere.
I have been using it just to watch DVDs on my PC but it would really be nice to be able to use it for what i got it for. I even took it out of the enclosure and installed it into my tower and it still only reads DVDs and CDs but no blank media.

My desktop is Win XP Pro Sp3. (My burner is LiteOn not HP though.)
When I Put Blank DVD, AutoPlay window pops up. (Your AutoPlay function might be disabled.)
If I cancel it and check the property of my burner (yes, the drive name changes from DVD_RAM to CD Drive), it shows both used space and free space are 0 bytes. It is just how XP acts against blank DVD disc. I still am able to burn discs without any problem.

Though with my laptop (Vista), if I check the blank DVD disc property, it shows 4.38GB as free space.

I assume yours are XP and I do not see any problems from your post.

Have you actually tried to burn anything? If you have troubles burning, then post the detail of your process and errors.

    Hotsauce,
Is your drive internal or external? If external, make sure you're not connected through a hub. If it's internal, make sure DMA is enabled.

Also, check the DVD region of the drive and make sure no packet writing programs are installed. (i.e. INCD, DLA, DirectCD, or DragToDisc)

    I hope this helps.
