I have the hp dvd writer 740b dvd/cd burner. When I first got it, I was using nero 7, and it didn't work well. Now I use Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 and it burns slow at about 10x.

What can I do to speed things up?

    thanks

    Check DMA is on.

There is a guide about that here.

If DMA is on, then post a burn log for us to look at please.

Also, the reason Nero could have been burning slow is due to have Roxio installed too. Nero conflicts with Roxo and causes burn problem.
There is a zapper for Roxio here if you want to remove it.

If not, post a burn log here from your last failed burn with Nero of a CD. Then I can take a look :)

    Thanks for your reply.

I have actually removed nero and I am using Roxio EMCS 9. I switched my cd-r brand and now it seems to be working much better. The burning speed is still not up to 40x. It goes to about 35x and stays there. I'm still curious as to why the speed isn't at 40x. My DMA is on so I know that's not the problem. The cd-r media is capable of 48X. Is there any reason why it refuses to burn at 40X?

    thanks

You might need a firmware update. What make/model is your drive?

I'm not sure if the update made any difference, but with nero the drive appears to be burning at 40x. Or at least that's what it says. It takes about 3 minutes or so to burn a full 700MB disc. Is this the amount of time it should take? I'm not sure.

    thanks

I'd say that was roughly the right speed/time. Also, the update for your drive which I gave you helps the drive recognise new disks and new burn strategies, e.g, faster burn speeds.
