My hp dvd writer 740b works fine playing CDs and DVDs, but when it comes to burning the "toaster" doesn't even recognize an empty CD-R80... This worked fine for few monts, but now I can't burn anymore.

I read that Itunes program creates an additional driver called "GEARAspiWDM.sys" and that has caused problems with some people, so I went ahead and deleted that (along with registry files). Also, Sonic added another thing in there, so I removed that too. The CD-ROM drive still plays DVDs and CDs, but won't burn :(. I've tried many different CD-Rs and many different apps (Windows Media player, Nero, etc.). They both say that Insert empty CD-R/RW into the drive, and I put in and put in and it keeps saying the same thing.

The operating system I have is Windows XP. Is my only option of buying a new CD-ROM burner ?!? Just bought a car and I'm dying to make mixes that I can listen to while driving... Thanks in advance!

Same prob here. The error code indicated a cable problem, but a new cable didn't resolve the prob. I got fed up after a couple months of trying to figure out what the problem was and went and bought a liteon lightscribe for 35$. A LOT less than what I paid for the hp 740b just over a yr ago (beyond the warranty).

I have the problem since about 1.5 months. I even reinstalled my PC and the drive was working fine as before. When i installed the Microsoft updates(60 in total), the drive didn't work anymore. It is clear that the problem is caused by a recent Microsoft update. Hopefully a new update will correct this problem. I don't know if microsoft is aware of this problem. The HP helpdesc is not willing to help effectively . They answered me that the bug in my PC was not sold by them.
