    Hello,

Last year I purchased an HP a1206n which came with an HP DVD Writer 740b and have just been using it for CDs. Yesterday I tried to play a DVD and it would not recognize it. I tried a couple of DVDs and played it on a DVD player connected to my TV to make sure it worked. In My Computer the DVD drive is under Type: CD Drive so is that the reason why it does not a DVD? I am running Win XP SP2, 2 gigs of RAM, and thats the only CD/DVD drive besides a virtual drive I have installed. Could someone help me? If you need more information please post it or contact me on Thank you very much.
Edit: Haha thanks i guess its like a couple years back when you could post it and have no worries. Well I'm pretty sure I have the most updated one I just did it today.

    Great Forum

Hey,first thing before all, remove your mail address if you don't want spammers say a big hello to you.If it's not me saying this, sure other members or mods will do.

Now concerning your problem, maybe your drive needs a firmware update.

Well, first off there is no Firmware update available for that drive...

    No, that is normal.
What you can try is going to Hardware Manager and then uninstalling your drive by rightclicking it. Then restart your PC and windows will suto install it.

Then see if it will read them.

BTW: Does it not burn to DVD or just not read them?

Wow!Do you mean that for this drive it doesn't exist any firmware update or only for this moment there's none available?Because if a drive's firmware cannot get updated, isn't it hard to deal with(like some compatibility issues with some medias which could be fixed by a simple update for some regular drives)?

Hey,don't take it wrong,it's just that i keep on learning things everytime i'm in AD,that's why i like this place. It's a good place to learn and to share.

Well some drives, the manufacturers never update the firmware for, usually the less cared for drives lol. Anyway, I have checked around and, nope, no updates ;)

Well, there is this update on the HP website...
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...en&cc=us&lang=en&os=228&product=502021&dlc=en

But i presumed that was merely the stock firmware, as there wasn't any update listed on my usual f/w site. Try updating that gjivan72.

First I apologize for the late reply. I uninstalled Alcohol 120% a couple of months ago and it left a virtual drive so I have been spending a couple of hours trying to remove that. I just finally got rid of it.

Than I went to Device Manager and tried to uninstall the drive but no luck. I also did it in Safe Mode. I updated the firmware before I posted lol same result and I did it again hoping something would change but that did nothing :p. Any other Thoughts? Thank you all for taking your time out of your day to help me. And I also updated using this link. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...scription.jsp?lang=en&cc=US&swItem=pv-42566-1

Ok, so you have the latest firmware. Good.

Try cleaning your drives laser with a little rubbing alcohol and a cottun bud.
