If the external monitor does not work, check that the AC adapter is supplying the correct voltage and try running the laptop just on mains power with the battery removed to see if it is a power problem.

I had a similar problem with an HP laptop about a year ago which HP suggested might be a static problem. They suggested removing all user-removable components - battery, ram, Hard disk, CD drive etc and leave overnight. When I re-assembled it the next morning, much to my surprise, it booted up OK.

If neither of these work, the fans on/ lights on situation might point to a faulty processor. Hope it's still under warranty.

i removed all the removable components and left it but still the same, the harddisk is not being accessed at all, what should i be looking out for when connecting to an external monitor? id assume it would still be blank because the comp doesnt boot up.

    thanks guys

If you connect an external monitor, you should see the BIOS screen regardless of whether there is a hard disk in the machine. If you get nothing at all on the external monitor, then the problem may be with the motherboard or something connected to it - processor, video card, ram etc.
