Hi! I bought a new battery this week for my laptop as the other one would not charge. The only way I can use it is to leave the AC adapter plugged in at ALL times. Thought because the battery was old this was the problem. Then when the new one arrived IT WORKED temporarily on it's own as there was some charge on there. So then I turned off the PC and left it on charge for HOURS! After taking the AC lead out though the battery has not charge AT ALL! CAN SOMEONE ADVISE?!?!??!?!?!?
I have come to find out (through searching the web) that this is a common problem for this model. Coincidentally, I just took mine (zv5000) in for the EXACT same problem because I determined that there was noting I could do to fix it. (other than taking it apart and mucking with components on the motherboard. (which I don't have time or inclination to do right now). There are anecdotes about software BIOS updates, etc. I have determined that mine was the charging circuit on the mobo has died. I will post when I get verification from the shop today.
Thanks Dailun! I have come to think that it is the computer not charging the battery more so than the AC adapter. Would be great if you can advise the next step as sitting with the power lead plugged in ALL THE TIME is a pain! I have a nasty feeling that this could be a expensive fix? Cheers Joner
If the battery charges when AC is applied, then the charging circuit is good and the AC Power jack is probably broken or worn. If you believe that it's just a bad AC power port (another common problem), the fix should be about $60.00 USD and there are sites on the web offer that repair for this price (Google "broken laptop power jack). I had this problem as well and loose hinges to boot and I'm getting them all fixed at one time. This is what I get for being a nice guy and "lending" this laptop to my ex-wife (my son's mother).
Hi! Yeah it is a brand new battery BUT it doesn't charge the battery when the power is plugged in so I think you are right when you say that the AC jack is broken. Will prob take you up on the repair. Thanks mate Joner
If the AC jack is plugged in and the laptop is receiving power (laptop is ON) and the battery doesn't charge then it is a charging circuit problem. If the laptop won't run off of AC with a dead battery, then it's possible that the AC jack is broken. The two symptoms are separate and have two different causes.
Hi! Yeah then it's the charging circuit that is shot! What we looking at in regard to time and money to sort that one out D?
Hold on, Don't panic just yet. Take New battery out, plug ac adapter out. Hold the power button with no battery or power supply plugged in for 30 seconds or a few more. Plug battery back in and power supply. See what happens. This is suppose to reset charging circuit. Come back to me if that doesn't work, I have a proggy on floppy for that problem on the hp pavillion.
