htc phones and 2.3

    i have a nexus one and updated it to 2.3 using a downloaded update because i got tired of waiting for it to come ota...i was wondering if there was a way to update my buddys phone which has a 2.1 android on it but is not getting ota updates for 2.2.2 or 2.3.3...would updating it manually brick the phone or would it just not even allow it?

    Upgrades are available by phone models and makes.
    I think there are only a few phones that can update to 2.3 at the moment. All the newer ones come with it, other than that, you will have to wait for it to become available to your model of phone.

    does it have to be the official release? if not, just have him install cyanogenmod.
