I highly recommend a BenQ DW1650 or the DW1655 (if you want LiteScribe).

What about LG GSA-1466B with liteScribe or the latest in Benq DW1670
or is it better to go with your recommendation!

I just wanted to say I have the Sony DVD RW DRU-810A and i've had no complaints so far, although I do love the idea of having Litescribe... but if you are just looking for good burner thats not gonna cost much I would definetly get the dru...

actually there is one thing about it I forgot to mention, If you have a stand-alone dvd recorder that just so happens to use minus media (dvd-r/dvd-rw) it will not recognize the disc without updating the firmware.... I still have yet to update the firmware since I have a dvd-rom as well... but if your flying solo with just the one dvd drive you may want to ask around a lil more... but like I said its been a great recorder... fast, efficient, and can be quiet (yet another setting I've never cared to change) so what if it sounds like it gonna take off into orbit... but you can silence it

    Hi,
Both the Sony 820 & BenQ 1670 are the same drive. Based on a Panasonic chipset (so almost a Teac clone), not Philips Nexperia as found in the 1640/1650/1655. So no scanning, no SolidBurn, OverSpeed etc.
For the money BenQs 1650 (non LS)or 1655 (LS) are probably the best options.

    Zebadee,

Do I understand that the Sony DRU 820A & BenQ 1670 are the same drive?

I am planning on buying a Sony DRU 820A and want to burn to DVD-R media (Verbatim, Maxell or TDK) I am not sure what will work best. The media today is so complicated. I have a Memorex DVD DLRW16 drive that has been working LIKE A CHARM with TDK 8x DVD-R that I bought at Costco. I recently purchased some more at Costco and they went to 16x...NOW my drive won't work with them! VERY CONFUSING!

If anybody has any suggestions I would appreciate them !!! Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    @ jrsedison
Yes that's right. Sony 820 <> BenQ 1670. The same drive.
Nothing particularly wrong with either. Just media fussy. Good burns produced using Taiyo Yuden or MCC. Not bad with DL Verbatim.
The lack of SolidBurn & OverSpeed mean the drive will never be as adaptable as the BenQ 1640/1650/1655.
    For media check this out.

    @jrsedison

Upgrade your burner's firmware to the latest and that burner will probably recognize the new TDK media. Your choice of media is not the best. Try some Verbatim, Taiyo Yudens or (Sony and Maxell made in Japan).

    Zebadee

    THANKS !

One other question, the Sony DRU 810A is also available at Office Depot and I was wondering which one you think is a better drive? I use DVD Shrink & DVD Decrypter and as I mentioned in my previous post, my current drive was working fine until I got these new TDK 16x DVD-R's.

Any suggestions about media to use with either drive? You mentioned MCC? what is that? Also just purchased some Verbatim DVD-R printable at Sams Club, any good ?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Garmoon,

I did check the firmware upgrade on the Memorex site and I have the most current for that drive (apparently an old drive)! I just bought some verbatim printable DVD-R at Sams Club and I got the same problem. I was going to buy a Sony DRU-820A drive to try a diffrerent approach. The thing I noticed is that when I have DVD Decrypter on and I load a newer TDK or the Verbatim I just bought, the Decrypter window shows: Disc ID: 0@P-!-00

That is not there when I load one of my older DVD-R's from TDK which have worked fine for many months !

    Any thoughts ?

Evidently your drive is old as you said, and and the firmware is not upgraded anymore to handle the 16X media. I would suggest getting a BenQ 1650 from newegg.com. I got a BenQ DW 1650 4 mos ago there for $40 shipped. It book types +Rs to DVD-ROM and supports Nero Quality scan tools. Best burner on the market for the price. There is a thread about the BenQ burners if interested:

Edit: Those Verbs are excellent media.

    Hi,
The Sony 810 is a BenQ 1640 clone. As such is a classic. Using Sony f/w gives you limited access to BenQs QSuite.
The drive can be crossflashed to a fully functoning 1640.(This would void warranty). But SolidBurn.OverSpeed etc is then available to you.
Depending on cost you might want to consider the 1650.
No need to crossflash for SB/OS etc.
Newer drive drive, so longer possibly better support for the future. This drive already is better with some 16x nedia than the 1640.

Probably your best bet is a Benq DW1650/1655 or Pioneer 111D. They seem to be the best all-around drives. The Benq 1650 is now $32 at chiefvalue.com and shipping is only $3 more. The Pioneer is a few bucks more there or at mwave.com but also supports DVD-RAM. Both are reportedly good with a wide variety of media.
