I've just got a new laptop, with wireless thingy, whats it called, and I want to connect to the internet. Now here's the problem. I live in a shared house and one of my housemates has sole use of the phone line>..............Can I simply split the line at the wall/phone point so he has his phone line and I can whack a Access point in at the same time?????? Will it balls up his phone line, will I be able to get on the net doing this? and more importantly will my internet bill show up on his phone bill??? etc etc As u can see I know jack $h1t abput this wireless stuff, so any non-tech reply will be greatly appreciated!!!!
OK, i take it he has a Router that his Internet is connecting through? If yes, plug the Access Point into one of the RJ45 sockets (little bigger then telephone plug) DONE Make sure you put some kind of encryption on it, as people in close range may want to have a little leach of your bandwidth. Adding an Access Point into the Router will do nothing to his telephone line and will not show up on his internet bill (unless he has a certain download limit and you start using HEAPS) So a little more info on how he connects to the net, etc
Hi thanks for that, he doesn't use the net, he wouldn't know how to turn a computer on let alone connect to the net. he only uses the line/connection as a phone socket! How easy is it to encrypt the thingy, so no one uses it bar me!?!?!?
Ok, well first off you will need to get some sort of Internet connection before you can use an Access Point. For Example DSL As for the Encryption, most Access Points has a Web Interface when you log in, setup say 128bit Encryption. Then on the laptop, you enter the 26 digit code of Numbers and Letters you generate. So before you even need to worry about that, you need some sort of internet access
You need to pay for Internet access to use it. You will need some sort of connection, for example DSL aka Broadband or Cable. It depends on the country you are in and which supplier as to know much it will cost.
I am in the UK. Sorry for being thick as $hit......... So I need to buy an access point and then get internet access, from someone like AOL, or Tesco, or another provider? Do i have to buy a modem???? or will that come with my internet supply??? etc
Depending on the Provider you choose, some will give you a modem, some you have to pay for it. If you have to pay for it, you are probably best to get a Wireless Router (Basically Router and Access Point in one) instead of Router and then an Access Point CJC
Wow... amazing that someone actually helped this guy out with getting an internet connection... I hope all works out for him... Dude I recommend you make some phone calls to figure this whole internet in your house kinda thing. Or howstuffworks.com :0) good luck dudes!
